Automatic Drag racing
How do you guys run your cars? Traction control on or off? Shift manually or leave in 3rd or drive? JUst wondering..I didnt get to play with it much cuz my altenator went out at the track...so ...

TC off and what I'm racing dictates what gear I put it in and whether I get a wild hair up my ass to shift manually or not. I've never raced on a drapstrip tho so it might be different there

trans am 00 ws6- 1998 camaro ss vert
i did both when i got mine and figured out out quick one night. tring shifting myself and was getting low 13.1 13.0...then left it in drive and i got down to 12.70's. not bad for one night and about 10 passes. didn't have traction controll but i would leave it off.

Thats what i thought..No cool down from drivin there..car 210 degrees.. I ran 13.52 with traction off then light came on for altenator..said hell with it ran it again with traction on, and low voltage, went13.63. I left in 3rd..didnt get to try anything else..... I had 02 z28 few years ago went 13.7 in drive three times. when i shifted went 14.20 so..gonna try to go down again before they close this year just wanted some input. Thanks everyone

You cannot shift faster or more consistent than a computer.

never race with the traction control on.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. With my trans, it'll stay in that gear till I shift it manually. I don't necessarily do that, but if I wanted to hold the RPMS longer I can. Slipping it forward from 1st to 2nd? How exactly is that slower? It's not.
Don't use TCS, if you spin badly, it actually puts on the brakes.

Leave it in in overdrive tcs off. Take your tire psi down to at least 25psi. My stock 16" goes down to 20 psi.

No reason to try and shift a automatic yourself with stock valvebody. If I did have an auto, it sure as hell wouldn't have a manual valvebody. Your taking away what makes an automatic better then a M6. With shift points changed to your power curve, an auto does not want any human trying to out smart it, because you wont. Frost said it best a while back, don't remember exactly how he phrased it. Get your shift points firmed up, and let the auto shift itself

My experience with my untuned 2.73 automatic, no TC '98 TA:
Left to it's own, it would shift about 5800 tach indicated, resulting in 13.9x-14.1x @ 99.x-101.x.
When I held each gear manually, I would shift just at, or barely hit, the rev limiter and get be quicker by .2 and about 2 MPH.
It would be best for AT cars to have the shift point raised so you could then just floor it and hold on.
That being said, I sold that car so I can shift myself, whenever and however quickly or smoothly I want, since I feel it is way more fun with a stick on the street or back curvy roads like 62/262 into Rising Sun IN

Don't waste your time putting it in OD because you'll never see it. Besides the stock tunes will not shift into OD at WOT. TCS is a common sense inhibitor (smart people know when not to hammer the throttle) so turn it off.
Put shifter in D (or 3rd) and leave on the last yellowCraig

TC off and in drive or third. when i shift it myself on the street i can feel it hesitate to shift and ive heard of this in other peoples cars to. Since there was a delay on the street i never bothered to do it on the track because hesitation means not increasing your velocity

TCS=off, If your car is stalled get your RPMs up in the 2000-2500 range, then release break on third yellow. If it's not stalled then hold the break hard and rev as high as possible without moving.
