Ash cray cover won't stay closed!!!
When I bought my car a couple years ago the ash tray cover was broke so I went to the local dealership to get a replacement. when I got it and put it fits nicely and would stay closed unless i was driving. While driving if I hit the break even slightly the D**n thing would open. I wanted to know what is supposed to hold it closed if anything and has anyone else ever had this problem. I know it sounds stupid because its only cosmetic but it really annoys me.

nope I didn't even know there was a spring. like i said it was broken when i bought it so I guess that solves the problem. looks like I'll be making a trip to the dealer tomorrow.

Yep, it's the spring...which is a PITA to put in...when I bought my TA the dealership replaced the ashtray lid, which was broken, but didn't put the spring back in correctly....it was bothering me too, so I looked at my other fbody & saw the spring attached in it, which is how I figured out why the lid in the TA wouldn't stay put..

Here are a few pics w/ the lid completely open & the spring exposed, it connects from the lid into the plastic piece built into the ashtray opening:

And here's a pic of the ashtray lid partially closed, showing the movement of the spring:

ha ha yeah. considering I still haven't fixed it I'm not really sure if you could just buy the spring or if I'd have to find it at a junk yard. Either way I was thinking of keeping it closed with the use of magnets but if I were to go that route I would want it to look clean and I'm not sure if it could be done without looking bad.

I believe you can buy the spring separately; if you want to go that route, I can look up the part number in my parts manual for you.
Hmm...magnets might not be a bad idea-if you got some of the really thin ones it might not look too bad at all.
Here's another option for you. What if you just used velcro? You can buy velcro in precut circles, squares, and thin strips for pretty cheap. It'd be a pretty simple install too.

awesome thanks. I might just go the spring route. It seems like the easiest thing to do.
