98 trans am a4 not shifting into Park.

Hi guys,
Not sure if this is the best place to post this but im having problems shifting into Park on my a4. If im parking on a slant/hill, when I put the car in P it doesnt engage, and the car will start moving like if its on neutral. By this I mean the car will move on its own however there is light squeal sound like the same squeal when you have bad brakes.
Ill have to play with it a lil and eventually it will engage into Park. My transmission still shifts smoothly 1 - 4, however sumtimes when I put it in R it will also feel like its on Neutral. Ill shift it around a bit and then the R works.
I cant figure out if this is a small problem, somthing that just needs adjusting or if this is a potential serious problem.
Any help or advice would be great.

It sounds like more of a shifter problem. The trans has no adjustment inside of it. You might want to start there. Could be the cable as well.

ok problem fixed. as i was driving to the post office, i noticed my shifter now was super loose, and my car was only working on 1st gear. I managed to drive to my local transmission shop and all it was was a loose cable next to the transmission. They tightened it up and car is good as new. Thanks scwyyz.
