there are no rules in shifting.....as long as u dont ding past red ur fine....listen to the motor....when it starts 2 moan shift....if ur in first but getting on it u can go up to 5k and be fine .... if ur driving in the city and crawling at 15 mph and the motor sounds like its starting 2 moan at 2000 rpm, shift then

when ur racing u want to bring the rpms as high up as u can (not hitting red) then shift and yes its more of a humm when the motor needs 2 be shifted

Red- 2000 Trans Am
I usually shift at 5500-5700 in first gear when racing and the 6100 or so in the other gears.

LOL, these cars have a fuel cutoff (rev limiter) that kicks in around 6200 RPM to keep the motor safe. You CANNOT harm the engine UNLESS you wind out 3rd and accidently grab 2nd instead of 4th (or other mis-combo of gear changes).
The only "rules" for shifting are:
a) when racing, you want to wind it out to redline every shift. Keep in mind that the tach lags the actual RPMs a tad, especially in 1st gear, so you want to grab the next gear just when the tach gets to 6000 to avoid hitting the rev limiter.
b) in traffic, you only have to shift JUST BEFORE you hit the back of the car in front of you.
c) if you have to ask when to shift a manual trans, you probably should've considered an automatic.
