    ZL1 Camaro - 600 hp?

Did any of the GMMG 2002 ZL1 Camaros come with 600 hp? Saw a guy driving a blue one today. Thought it might be a clone at first, but it had the fender/hood stripes, roll bar, silver gauge faces, ZL1 and GMMG badges, GMMG chambered exhaust, Cragar wheels, billet grill, and 427 decal. On the stripe on the trunk was marked "In memory of Fred Gibbs and ..." (I think it was something Jenkins). The scoop said 600 hp, but the GMMG website says they had 400 hp. The ZL1's are rare as hell, but if this was a fake, this guy spared no expense - it was flawless. This was one bad MF'er!!

where is cedar park at....maybe i can sneak down there and take a look.....or drive it off.... haha. I don't remember any production camaro being in the 600 range. being that it's a 427, makes me curious if it was the LS7, in which case...the LS7 wasn't in production cars then.

It wasn't a production car, it was aftermarket, kinda like saleen. It used the C5r block to get the 427 cubes. I'm not sure if it had 600 horse, but it did make quite a bit.

Cedar Park is between Georgetown and Austin, west of I-35. Yeah, according to the website it would have been a 400 hp LS6, but this one said 600 hp on the hood. It had a roll bar, and the website says only 28 were made with them. If so, then I'm surprised to have even seen it on the road. But it sure was done right if it was fake. I honestly think it was real. I should have followed the guy longer to talk to him about it. Do you guys think someone could even buy those ZL1 or GMMG badges?

Anyway, I was so excited about seeing it, I had to share with ya'll. No one at work has heard of a ZL1, so it wouldn't mean anything to them, just another Camaro

yes i know of one that had 600hp, they did a report in an issue of super chevy i think. As a matter of fact i think that is the only one besides the one that GM totes around with it to shows. IT says in memory for the guys but it is a dick harrell zl1

i bought a bought a 350 page hardback book a few months ago, entitled, "Camaro-Forty Years". according to the book, they do exist lol. their is a 2 page article along with a 2page picture of a blue one, '02, (says only blue one to exist in this color) though. the one pictured is light blue with cragar ss's, stripe from the ss hood extending to the rear of car, hockey stripes with "427" decals in front of front tire. this one also has a "Berger CHEVROLET" sticker above the rear wheel. doesnt really say much about it though, other than what has been metioned. limited production(duh). all aluminum ZL-1 427(like the '69). it does mention 600hp, but does not say if that is motor or at the wheels. either way, its a badass camaro.

its also got a few pictures/articles about the limited edition Berger/Hot Rod(Berger teamed up with Hot Rod Magazine to build 37) Edition Camaro. its got a few pictures of a beautiful red one with hockey stripes and "380hp" "call-outs" in front of front tires. the book said this was RWHP(380).

this is all coming from this book so im sure theres more that im missing, im just sharing what im looking at/have read in this book.

fyi-for a great read regarding the camaro, and history of the camaro i would recomend this book.

    It's crank power.

And for the cost of it new...it would have been cheaper to have the work done.
Nice cars, worth a decent amount as a collector type car now.

The car you saw (if genuine) was the ZL-1 Phase III which did infact produce 600 "flywheel" horsepower via a 12:1 C5R block 427ci. If that's not crazy enough there was even a Phase V Package which had a 12.5:1 454ci LS6 which was rated at 630hp, but realistically put out 650 flywheel horsepower.

True you could have built it yourself cheaper, but then it wouldn't have been a ZR-1 and you wouldn't get 1/2 back of what you put into it.

On another note, one of these (Stage III) sold on E-bay 2 months ago for $90k. That's a little better than "decent". Imagine what they'll be worth in 25 years or so.

    $90K is a lot for an F-Body.
Worth it?? I guess if you are a Camaro fan and have the cash.
    I couldn't imagine actually driving an F-Body that I paid $90K for.

I am more than happy with my car. 635 at the fly, less than half the cost of that ZR1.

    Okay??
    Not sure I understand.

Not taking ANYTHING away from the ZR1 Camaro. Beautiful cars.
I am just not a fan of 'collector' cars. I would want to drive it.
Of course you could...but that would also lower the value.
