What Do You Do For A Living?

I am planning on going to college in the summertime and am absolutely unsure of what I want major in or what career path to pursue. I thought I'd ask you LS1 members and recieve some input as to what career paths you have choosen or fields of work you are in. Also just a consensus do you enjoy what you do or not?

I am a Lead Aircraft Mechanic at an Airline. Love my job, and make great money, however I am extremely lucky to be where I am today. The Aviation industry is notorious for tough times and layoffs. I wouldn't recommend getting into this field unless you really love it and plan on switching jobs every so often.

The best advice I can give someone about to go into school is to talk to the job placement people at the college and come up with a list of professions / jobs you are interested in. Get the college to arrange shadowing opportunities with people in these fields and ask lots of questions. Do some research on what the earning potential is in the fields you are interested in. Don't bust your ass for a degree in Social Sciences and realize later that being a Social Worker doesn't pay well although it can be rewarding in other ways. It all depends on what's important to you.

The biggest line of BS I've ever gotten was that a college degree guarantees you an excellent paying job in a field you love. The teachers and staff will feed that to you all day, every day. That keeps you a happy customer to come back semester after semester and plunk down tuition, books, room and board, etc. Realize that schools are businesses and they are going to sell you education.

The worst thing you can do is just take a generic program like I did: Business Management. I busted my ass and did the best I could: I was President of the Professional Business Leaders club (Phi Beta Lambda), made the Dean's List every semester, graduated with academic distinction, got inducted into a National Honor Society for Business (Sigma Beta Delta) and I currently have a job that anyone with a High School Diploma could get. It's not that I am not ambitious, I wanted to be a Financial Advisor / Stock Broker but after a year in banking I realized that wasn't for me. That was a tough realization. Also with it being so difficult for people with education and no work experience to get into a rewarding career. Basically you have to start from entry-level and work your way up. The shortcut is in knowing the right people. Network, network, network!

You need to specialize in a field that is in demand. Go to grad school and separate yourself from the gazillion other students getting the exact same degree you get. Study abroad if you must! Get the credentials you need to be competitive in the job market. And when you get turned away for being overqualified, don't feel too bad.

Don't sell yourself short! Take the time to do some research into what kind of career you want. Find out what it takes to get there and get the education, get the training, network and meet the right people to make it happen. It's not what you know as much as who you know that really open doors for you and that's the truth.

    Rant over...

To answer your question, I manage a car rental business. It's got it's ups and downs like anything but all in all it's a nice gig. I get to be on LS1.com alot so I really can't complain.

I WAS in the military as a cryptologist for 4 years, and photographer. Cryptology.. eh... photography - hell yes I enjoy that! I still do photography. I also do some web and graphics design for money, as well as the photography (glamour shots, etc).

Currently I am not working, per say, I am also a full time college student majoring in Production (TV, Film, Radio, etc) and minoring in Theatre. It's quite interesting; ultimate goal is to work on a movie in Hollywood, or work on documentary films, or work as an audio engineer either in TV, Theatre, or Music studio.

union sheet metal worker in Las Vegas Nevada, currently a 20 yo apprentice. like previously stated thank god for unions and hopefully you dont take to long to get in a trade. free schooling in my local union, unless you drop the program and work non union sheet metal, and enough to live comfortably. but then again sheet metal doesnt pay the same scale in every state it just happens that we are paid very well here but still have a high cost of living. i didnt want to pay thousands upon thousands of dollars to go to school when i found something that is always in demand no matter where you go. sheet metal work is ventilation duct work and a/c = heating which people always complain about the weather. so even when the casino rebuilds are done i can still find plenty of work in my trade

really. stupid decision. should have gone with accounting. it's the only business degree that you get a certification for. being an accountant you can do anything someone with a business management degree can do, you just will make more money and you don't look like a dumbass that wanted to tell people what to do. lol

Right now I'm a teller at a US Bank...but its just a temporary job. I graduated from college last June with a BS in Biology and have been accepted into dental school. I start school (and will be quiting my job) in August. In 4 years, I'll be a dentist.

I have my business management degree with a minor in accounting. I started out in accounting and wanted to gouge my eyeballs out daily in accounting. The stereotypes about accountants and all the nicknames they have are typically true

I probably should have stuck with accounting, but I can't sit still for 2 minutes, I have to be physically active. Accounting and me just didn't mesh
