    what causes this to happen?

    wiper controller is at "off" position, but they stop here

    Kind of odd it happened out of the blue like that.
    Honestly have no idea what would cause that. does the motor still work?

    That's the wiper motor that no longer parks. Time for a new wiper motor.

    wiper motor still works, but as mentioned, it doesn't "park" itself in the proper position. . .

    Yep, needs a new wiper motor. It's the park function of the motor that isn't working. The only way to fix that is,,,,new wiper motor unfortunately. It's common.

    My Grand Prix had the same thing happen. Turned out to be some loose wires. Hopefully you are that lucky, otherwise as FBJ said, it's the motor.
