Is there any common problems on the 98 z28?

I am looking to buy an LS1 f body and I see a lot of 98 z28s for sale. This is the first year of the LS1 in the F body and I was wondering are there any common problems or issues with the 98 models? Does anyone own a 98? Any major problems?

I think the only big difference is the ECM computer. If you use a hand held programmer, it only works on the 98 models. Now the HP Tuners, LS1 Edit, EFI Live, ect... will work on all models including the 98. ( mine is all modded out now )
I've had no problems unique to the 98's... Good Luck !!!

Not specific to 98 years but all LS1' have VERY WEAK rear ends & if you get one with a Monsoon stereo the speakers are also very weak and of course they all have weak power window motors . Everything else about our cars is pretty much up to snuff I think .

I've never heard of any problem specific to any year model, 98-02.

Only real differences you're going to find is that a 98 (and 99-00) won't have as good of an intake or clutch as an 01 or 02.

As for common problems. First off, pretty much everybody who's owned an LS1 f-body for more than 8 minutes has replaced a power window motor. And secondly, if you plan on doing any racing at all...upgrade that rear end. Stock power and sticky tires will snap it in a heartbeat.

Other than that...these are well built cars. Not much goes wrong with one if it's been taken care of. Even well past the 100k mile mark.

98's got perimeter bolt valve covers, thinner cylinder liners than 99-up and a couple of other things like a metal gas tank. When and if you go to mod it, you will find that aftermarket parts will be harder to find and sometimes more expensive. If you can, get a 99-up F-Body

I never had any problems with my 98-SS since I owned it new. 10-Years old and still have both my factory window motors with no problems also.

You'll need to make sure the oil pressure is good. Thats the only serious thing I have ever heard of. They dont flow very well in the 98's and alot of poeple get them ported or switch to a ls6 or aftermarket pump.

I used the hyportech before I went with HP Tuners. It was only for 98 F-Bodys though...
