    SS Hood

Thinking about putting a SS hood on my 2000 Z28. Do I need to find a stock hood or are any of the after market hoods worth buying?

    Thanks

From what I've gathered, the OEM hood is the way to go. I have heard way too many horror stories of people buying aftermarket fiberglass hoods and having nothing but problems. Mainly fitment issues and glass quality. The only trade off is that they are a hell of a lot cheaper than any OEM hood out there! So do some local craigslist or eBay searching to try to find an OEM one if your budget will allow it.

    Best advice you can get.

And don't worry about the first reply you got, you had a legit question. Unfortunately you'll get answers like that from time to time.

I got mine from the classifieds on this forum. The hood was ASCD (American Sports Car Design) Fiberglass hood. It was already painted my cars color so all I had to do was take it to my friends body shop and he put it on with no fitment issues. The hood is a good quality is the closest looking thing to OEM that i've ever seen with functional ram air. It's also lighter than the stock hood and cheaper. Hope this helps

What about going the flip flop route... put on the new SS badges! Or even better, the Australian SS badges! It would be different.

You can also look at it this way:

Although OEM is initially more expensive, the prep work involved in getting most aftermarket hoods up to par can cost you some major $$$. Many aftermarket fiberglass hoods come with a variety of imperfections such as pinholes, waves, bubbles in gelcoat, etc. Also the fiberglass consistency in many aftermarket hoods are horrible as there are some very thin and weak areas. You would not want to discover this the hard way after all the prep work and painting has been done. In the long run, you will be better off with the OEM part. Less regrets, heartaches, and probably money.

FYI, OEM SS hoods are made from a superior quality material called SMC or Sheet Molded Compound. It is much stronger than the traditional or polyresin type fiberglass without many of the common defects.

For parkway440, too bad you are so far away as I have one for sale. It is an OEM SS hood that came off a NBM Camaro SS. I will not ship this hood as costwise, it would not be beneficial to you. However, if you are ever in the Detroit area, let me know.

OEM hoods are the best. Makes sure that you get the SS specific hood struts.

I say go with either a OEM SS hood or a nice cowl hood. I love the look of a small cowl on our cars. There's a white one in the white camaros unite that's awesome, I think Y2KPewterSS is friends with him? Not sure.
