SS Camaro real or not real??

I know this has been talked about already but I do have a question. I am looking at a 2000 SS Camaro with 105000 miles. I pulled a car fax on the car and everything checks out ok except it doesn't say it's an SS. All it says is that it is a Z28. How can I tell if this car is an SS or not? Please help and hurry because I am suppose to pick up the car Monday. Thanks

They are closed at the moment. Does anyone know of a web site I can go to to enter the vin # and it will tell me?

I would call your local chevrolet dealership in the morning. Mine told me That it was a real ss. Also the WU8 code on the drivers side door sticker is another giveaway to see if its real. Goodluck, hope it is!

I called the guy and he looked on the door of the car. It does have WU8 written on the door but has Z28 behide it. Does that mean it's a SS?

If it says Wu8 you are good usually.

Call the dealership, and to be really sure call SLP. Supply both places with the vin and they should both confirm its a real ss.

    Goodluck!

+1 for calling SLP with the vin number. I did that before I bought mine to make sure it was a real SS, and there should be a sticker in the door jam that says "this vehicle was modified by SLP Performance on this date________ by SLP Toms River NJ" SLP can also give you your build number if it is a true SS. Keep in mind, that some SS's came with the dash plaque that says SS and some didnt. But all SS's should have the sticker in the door......

    bah, SS this SS that.
    anything can be an SS.

I wouldn't pay the extra cash just to know it was an "SS", unless the car was worth it.
any ls1 f-body with a couple nice mods is an SS to me.

I dont totally agree with that. I'm sure we've debated this before, but a real ss is a real ss. Someday we all hope they will have some collector value for being real. Look at the Shelby clones from the 60's, those aren't anywhere near as valuable as an original shelby. Just my opinion though...

Also, if it didn't have a sticker on the passenger door jam, that meant it didn't have any slp options. Like upgraded suspension, oil, exhaust, etc. You still have ss spec parts, just not ones better than the ss spec.

I'm sure an SS's value is more than a non SS car.
But unless your a car collector, an SS isn't any better than any other LS1 out there.
Sure it might have a couple upgrades, but nothing major... just little bits and pieces anyone could add if they wanted to. If SS came stock super or turbo charged, that'd be something to rave about. (IMO)

Now..B.lee does make a good point. Back in the day, around when he was born, Camaro's used to come with an option called RS. This was simply a dress up option, that added no HP whatsoever. Many people liked the way it looked, and added it to their cars later if they bought them used. It was the hide away headlights, and distinctive tailights that was so desirable. This ended in 1970. Enough of the history lesson. Kinda. The SS option always was the "king" of the HP. With this option you could order the big block 396 and so forth. I know the lil 302 was a screamer in it's own right, and put out much more HP than advertised, but it was still the thunderous sound of the big blocks that ruled the streets back then. ALL SS for the most part. Nova's, Chevelle's, etc...so when people wonder why Chevy made the SS Camaro more powerful than the legendary Z28, no mystery, that's the way it was always suppossed to be. Two different cars designed for two different reasons. Todays SS's do have different suspension items, etc... and we are all familiar with the many things that make them special, but again, b.lee makes a good point. Under the skin, the LS1's are all the same, and unlike the past, today's cars, (Z28/SS) are MUCH more similar than before.
