    Skipshift Question

I just received the SLP skipshift eliminator in the mail, and I'm planning to install it tomorrow. Before I do so I better ask is there any valid arguement against doing this? The commie at Firestone about had a heart attack when I asked him to plug it in.

Believe me I'm trying. Any clue why the skip shift is even on the vehicle? Japanese sabotage?

CAGS is the dumbest "feature" on our cars, intended to improve gas mileage and avoid gas guzzler taxes back in the day. You will never miss it. It makes no difference to emissions either

What exactly is the skip shift? I have seen that light come on in my car and didn't know what it was.

    Sadly now demodded :(

Skip shift (the proper term is CAGS which is an acronym for Computer Aided Gear Selection) is a computer programming function which forces an M6 to go from 1st gear to 4th gear during "normal" driving. This promotes much better fuel mileage. This function is disabled during part (approx 1/2 way) to full throttle acceleration and you can grab 2nd and then 3rd without being forced into 4th gear. I deleted mine through programming but they sell an add on to do this also.

I don't like the "skip shift" function at all but I do find myself going from 1st to 4th to 5th (or 6th depending on the speed limit) during normal everyday driving as it allows me to accelerate adequately with out burning too much gas by keeping the revs below 2000 rpm.

Although I've only had the 98 for a few weeks I've found that you can get 16-18 mpg in the city by driving it "easy".

The "Skip-Shift" eliminator was the very first mod I did. After my tuner had his way with my car, now the light doesn't even come on, so a heads up to those of you that buy a used Camaro, and see that little light come on, it simply means that somebody has already done you the favor of installing the eliminator.

Unless you experience it yourself you will never know how incredibly annoying this is. If my girl will finally get out of the shower I'm heading off to disable it. I was in one situation where I needed some power and it tried kicking me into fourth gear. I had to drop it back into first and floor it to avoid an oncoming collision.

Hell yes it's finally in and I do love going through the gears. Being able to shift and still have power is very nice.

I think mine has already been "fixed" because when the skip shift light comes on...I can still get into 2nd gear.

Does this mean someone has already done this mod on my car?

probably, try accelerating slowing to between 15-20 mph in 1st (the only speed range where skip shift functions). If you can shift into 2nd then CAGS is disabled.

Oh yeah you'd notice it right away. The second I pulled the car off the lot at the dealership it kicked on. At first I thought something was wrong. So I come up to the next light same thing, and my only option again was 4th gear. You can still bypass this by going to 20 mph I learned later on this site. If you don't want to launch at every red light you'll have to shift before 15 mph. That doesn't seem like a big deal except that you are low rpm for the first two gears creeping along. Those in opposite lanes have all sped off and the people behind you are switching lanes. Whoever previously owned this z28 left it on for 70,000 miles. The car was in perfect condition and the z rated factory tires have been replaced with ms. At least I think that's what happened everything says Z on the inside of the door. I'm curious about that because if it came with ms I could be capped around 115 mph, or so I've read. Anyways, trust me you would have known it's impossible to miss. I drove around like that for two weeks and I blame the smoke at that last stoplight on post skip shift traumatic stress disorder.

Now to find an open stretch of highway to test this on, or maybe I'll just take it to the track. I don't really want to risk jail to find out, but I'm pretty damn curious to know.

Ive always gotten around it by given the car a slight rev before second gear, it automatically disables when the RPMs pass a certain point. Regardless of speed.
