my homemade ipod dock
I was using my stock cassette deck with one of those cassette adapters. Works well, but I didn't like the wire, and had no real good way to set it that I could control it. So since my ashtray lid was already busted, I decided to use it as a base. Ground off all the little tabs underneath, flipped it upside down, and cut a hole for an ipod dock adapter that I had laying around from my clock radio. Ran the wire from the cassette up into the dash and down into the console.
Pins hold the lid in place (shown now as nails)
I still have to glue it all together, but it seems to work very well.
Also check out my custom "SS" hat pin covered lighter :-)

Thanks for the compliments ! I might make some kind of trim plate / cover for it at some point to finish it off. Just have to find the right type of material. I'm thinking black polystryrene. It is easy to cut.

Here's mine. It doesn't move or fall or anything... I ordered the blank plate from 6litereaterdesigns.com and bought the iphone belt clip holder on ebay. A little JB weld and the clip it stuck the the blank plate and a couple pieces of velcro hold the plate to the car. Voila....looks factory too!

I had searched the internet for such a product .... came up with some expensive unit for Corvettes and European cars in the ashtray, so I decided to build my own.
Sommer ... I have an Ipod Touch too ... so I am interested in seeing what you got. I usually just keep my old Nano in the Camaro ... that's why I set it up for that vehicle.
I actually have a Panasonic deck (in my low mileage 92 Suburban) with the hook-up for the headphone cable. I typically use the Touch in the Suburban. Which is usually longer trips anyway. It fits nice in the factory radio delete box.

I like it Sommer ! Wish I would have thought of that before .... but then I would still have a broken ash tray lid anyway :-)
Plus since I still have a separate cell phone, I can keep that in the compartment right behind the ash tray.
I don't care some much about my Nano, thus why I keep it in the car. I would never keep the Touch in the car. Although I take them both out if it gets Hot in the car, as it has been here recently in PA. Both are sitting here at my desk, even though I can not listen at work.Last edited by AKohler883; 08-21-2009 at 12:39 PM.

Both are real clever.

Both of those are great ideas! I on the other hand went the easiest route and put a strip of velcro on the back of my phone case and placed the other piece on the dash just below the speedometer just to the right of the ignition. You can see it perfect through the steering wheel between the horn button and the wheel. Cost 2.99 lol

^^ Nice!!
I actually have the iSimple car kit so i needed to plug into the bottom of the phone. And all I had to do was snake the cable through the car. It both charges and plays the iphone and i got full stereo controls and steering wheel controls.
that's the gist!

That really rocks! I was keeping my cables and stuff under the ashtray lid, but they kept getting pinched. I've been looking at how to install an ipod dock in there for some time and thanks to you, I know how to do it.
