Like all the 1998-2002 V8 F-body cars, your friend's 2000 Z28 has an LS1 engine (1993-1997 V8 F-body cars have the LT1 engine). While there were a few small changes with the LS1 from 1998 to 2002, basically they are the same.

This is just a start, but I'm sure that over the next few days or weeks, plenty will chime in to give you some more info.

Gator is correct. People say the lt1 feels like it has a better low end...while the ls1 pulls hard up top. I think that the ls1 is more refined, has a smoother power band and idle (stock cam ) The ls2 is in the 05 gto's and vettes...it's a 6.0 liter while the ls1 is a 5.7 liter. The ls2 is also drive by wire...so there's no throttle cable on the throttle body. Stock the ls1 has around 340 at the crank on average, I think the ls2 is rated at 400. Ummmmmmmmm...if you can afford a 01+ f-body i'd get one, they don't have a shitty egr system and come with the ls6 intake...which is a good thing. But the lt1 is also a great motor..has an iron block which is a lot stronger than the ls1 aluminum block. Also has reverse flow coolant...some say you can run it at a higher compression because the heads are cooled first and that reduces chances of detonation. Don't wanna make this too long so i'll let the others fill in the blanks....good luck with your future Z. This is a good place to learn about them

Yo gomez..LS1's are the greatest..in my opinion. you'll love the sound of an ls1 with headers....its like music to your ears. Dont wait for GM to come out with anything those dumb bastards wont be able to get it right if they do get it out. yeah thats what i said. Go on and get an ls1 car and be happy your riding in ONE OF the fastest stock camaros ever made. slap in some 4:10's and kick some ass....

Last year in May I bought a 01 v6 camaro, it lasted about 9 months and I got a major itch for a V8 I started test driving lt1 Camaros because thats where my price range was. I found a 02 z28 with 35th anniversery badges for $18k. I talked them down to $16,5 and it was worth EVERY extra penny. Get an LS1!
