I guess my car just blew up
So I got a call from my GF about 15 minutes ago
"Dude, your car is F***ED!"
"Why, what happened?"
"I duno, it's knockin' real bad, I was just driving down the road and it started knocking real bad all the sudden! This is BULL****!"
"Is it coming from underneath or in front of you" (she's clueless about cars)
"In front of my steering wheel, that's what it feels like"
"What's the oil pressure reading?"
"The white line above the red mark where 0 is, but your SES light is flashing"
"Sweet, well call a tow truck, I'll look at it when it gets here"
My buddy has the Yukon, he's doing a state inspection on it today and is getting off and coming to my house, at around the same time the car should be arriving on a rollback... I swear, I can't win for losing
I keep telling myself not to jump to conclusions, as I'm aware it could possibly be a collapsed lifter or something of the sort, but worst case scenario, I could be looking at replacing the engine.
So does anybody have any reccomendations as for where to go for a motor, and what is too much for a pulled engine out of a wrecked fbody? Also, how am I supposed to tell if a motor pulled out a wrecked LS1, wasn't damaged in a front end collision to where it could've screwed the motor? I'm not looking forward to this, but I guess I'll atleast get to do my cam swap like I've been wanting

There is a place selling reman LS6 engines for ~$3000. Is this within your budget? If so I'll look around for the site or maybe someone else has it more at hand.

Wasn't that crateengines.com or something like that???
Anyway, that seems to be a popular swap as several people here have done the same thing.
I seem to remember someone here mentioned GMpartsdirect was having a sale on the LS6 crate engine too,,,,something like $3,400 Which should be a brand new engine, not a remain like the place Jim and I are thinking of.Last edited by Firebirdjones; 03-07-2010 at 02:01 PM.

My wife called me one time on her way to work (35 miles from home) and told me the oil light was coming on in her car. She said it had come on the day before a couple of times when she pulled up to traffic lights and stop signs, but she forgot to tell me about it.
I freaked! Told her to pull over and shut it down. Asked her if it had been knocking at all and then had her pull the dipstick. Fortunately, it turned out to be a bad sender tripping the light.

I honestly thought something under the car had popped loose causing a vibration or knocking sound. She barely knows where to put oil in at
And I agree on not driving the LS1, but my buddy had the Yukon giving it a full-over detailed state safety inspection.... so she had to drive the car
Ah well, I'm just glad I don't have to immediately bust for a stroker

Mine did it with our Durango. She walked back to our house like a mile or so and told me the tranny was shot and the car wouldn't drive anymore. When I left the house I followed the trail of tranny fliud to it - had just blown a line. Since then, she's had a little education on new fangled motor vehicles.

I think it's funny you're bringing your g/f into this good and well knowing that you're single and this happened to yourself and you only found out about the coil pack after taking it to a mechanic.

Some guys don't know anything either. My brother decided to help our mom one day and put a quart of tranny fluid in......
....the engine. Didn't know what went where. At least he didn't try to fill up the radiator...

35th - Yeah, you're right, didn't wanna say anything but yeah, ya know Crazy thing actually, is that my buddy is the one I taught and shared all my LS1 knowledge with when he was startin' out workin' at the dealership. He grew so much interest in it, he bought and built him a nice blue LS1 Z, then turned around and sold it. In general he may know more about other cars out there, but I beleive I still hold the flag when it comes to the '93-'02 4th gens
Mr. J - I've done that. I was 10 or 11, dad told me to check the oil in the riding lawnmower, I did, it was low, grabbed some oil and put a little in there. Told dad it was good, this was what I put in it, and proceeded to hop on the tractor to mow the grass. I don't think I'd ever felt any more stupid in my life when he pointed out it was gear oil, and damn near slapped me silly

And the things I had done in that John Deere 318, that oil mix-up was the least of any so-thought problems Hell, I could pull the front tires off the ground by being WOT in reverse (which may have been 3-4mph), and SLAMMING the lever all the way forward. Then doing doughnuts in the snow w/ chains on the back by hitting the footbrake... good times good times

My little brother (he was about 21 or so at the time) put either the mixed gas in the lawnmower or the regular gas in the weedwacker (can't remember which) and nearly blew the SOB up. Ever since then my father took a big marker and wrote on each gas can what specifically it was for
