I don't get it (5th Gen Camaro)

I don't understand why it seems like EVERYBODY is complaining about the new Camaro being overpriced. It costs less than comparably equipped Challengers and little more than comparably optioned Mustangs, and costs only slightly more than a comparable 4th gen did new. A brand new 325hp Camaro SS in 2002 was knocking on the door of $30K and didn't have the level of structural integrity and performance potential that the new one has. Without arguing to the point of getting this thread locked, I'd like to dicuss this, or at least prompt some logical thinking as I am on my way to bed. Remember to at least keep it friendly, if not productive

msrp in 2002 was $18,415 -$29,925

which included a convertable model too...

i belive the sticker on mine was about 24k... SS with t-tops... zr1 rims

z28 were around 21-22k

Msrp for a 2002 ss was 29,625. Msrp for a 2010 camaro 1ss is 30,450, 2ss is 32,xxx. 2002 ws6 msrp was 32,065. So a 2002 camaro ss 8 years early was less than a 1,000 dollar less. Seems like a good deal to me.

Agreed with Zinergy... They're not that much different untill you start really loading up a 2ss, because then they can get upwards of $38-39k. We have to take into account inflation as well... the value of a buck has significantly decreased in the past few years.

Now on to my modding duties:

I will be watching this thread closely. The past 2 threads with similar topics trainwrecked horribly. Any nonsense will be dealt with and will result with the thread being locked. Consider this your warning guys and keep it clean.

Very good point!!! Inflation, techincally 30,000 8 years ago was worth more than 30,000 today. Thanks for the inflation Federal reserve

It would probably be very interesting to see if there are any members here who actually purchased a new 2002 and see what they really paid, then compare it to what others really paid for a new 2010.

I'm sure people are still paying much more than msrp the 2010 camaro since its brand new. Give it a year or two and they will be close to msrp. Also as mentioned before inflation, the US dollar has lost 40% of its value since 2002.

I would agree that the new Camaro is not overpriced... all cars are. I only paid $70k for my 2800 sq ft house. To think that I would pay half that for a car to me is absurd. I like the new cars, but I don't think that they are worth the money. But then again it all relates back to inflation. Guess I just need to keep trying to grow that money tree in my backyard and then I won't have to worry about money for anything.

Hey guys, here's some info for you.

I bought a 2SS back in January. Sticker was $36,065. I got it for $35,500. Plus I traded in a truck that was a year old. Bought that for $27,000 in Jan 2009 and they gave me $25,500 on trade. Which was pretty good I think. So what I'm saying is they didn't hose me on my trade, and they came down over 500 on the Camaro. Plus they rounded my GM Card from $128 up to $2000. So I actually only paid $33,500 for a pretty loaded 2SS. (polished wheels, sunroof, stripes, plus all the 2SS stuff) For $33,500 I like the car a lot. There are even better deals out there now.

Back in July 2003 I was looking at the last of the 02 Z28's at the dealer where I bought my 96 Z28 vert. Best deal they could come up with was $27k for a loaded Z28 (only thing it didn't have was the convertible top). My 96 had only 40,xxx miles on it and, while they offered me $12.5k in trade I passed as I didn't want to have a car payment again.

Although approximate, we have one 2002 model that was available new for 11% less than msrp, and a 2010 that was purchased for 9% more than msrp.

It will take a lot more examples, but that is interesting to consider.

Not bad, so you paid 4-6,000 more than a SS or ws6 in 2002 for a better car 8 years later.

I like the car but of course it could be better. The first two things I plan to do are suspension (sits too high, and pushes in the corners) and shifter. (stock is too mushy) Of course gears and more power would be nice, but I do want to keep the warranty at least for a few years.

This vid was just posted in the firebird forums yesterday. It has both a 35th ann. Camaro and a CETA T/A featured in it. At the end they show the sticker prices on it. 32,500 for the Camaro and 35,700 for the T/A.

My 2002 Z28 with all options except T-tops and the 12 disk changer stickered at 27,345 including destination. I got $4000 over book value on my trade in and about a $1000 more off in negotiations. So real cost of the car was about $22,000.

I think we also need to take into account the economy and unemployment rate. 2002 a person could afford to shell out another $50 a month for a sweet ride (not to mention gas was about .90/gal just before Bush took office) Now people are going to the cheaper more fuel efficient family sedans which affects supply and demand of the new Camaro as well.

In today's dollar a no option '02 trans am would be about 36k based on '02 msrps. Maybe that's why ls1's didn't sell worth a crap. You get much more for your money now
