All SS's started life as a Z28 and were shipped to SLP for modification after they left the assembly line. You can tell by decoding the VIN or checking for the sticker on the side of the door (with all the codes) to see if it has any options that would make it a legit SS. But in reality there is very little difference, and outside of collectors I don't think it truly matters that much.

CGM/BGC- 98 Z28 / 98 Formula
Look in the driver side door. You will see a sticker that says SLP Eng. there. If for some reason that sticker isnt there look in the option codes. You will see WU8 and if the car has any SLP installed options you will see Y2Y. Hope this helps

The 2001/2002SS exhaust is different than the z, two round pipes on each edge or two rectangular center pipes in the middle. The z has both rectangular pipes on each side. You can also tell by the 17" wheels. The z's are 16". The spokes for the SS are different. The spiler on the SS is higher * has two supports. The Z is lower and I think only has 1 support. The door sticker is a dead giveaway. The there's the hood of course. You can also call SLP enginnering & give them the VIN # & they will tell you what was the SS build #. The SS package was about $4k-$5k more than the Z when they were selling new. If anyone fakes out a Z they will probably spend that much to "convert" it, but it will never be an SS. Only Z's that went to SLP for alterations are real SS, if it didn't get modified at production at SLP then it ain't an SS.
