Any number of Auto part stores will run a scan for you for $30.00. Probably a O2 sensor, buy it and thread it in, have them reset it, and be on your way.
If you check it yourself, all you will see is a code and you'll have no idea what the number means, better to have someone tell you. Right rear O2 sensor fail (for example) and then you can go from there.

Like Mr. Hyde said, go to a parts store. AutoZone will check it for free and tell you what the number means, and usually be able to give you a list of things to check. You can also disconnect your battery for a bit and that will clear the code. If there is still a problem, the Check Engine light will come back on. Id have it scanned before clearing it, though, just so you know what you're looking for.

ODB-II, I think it's called. Autozone does it for free on cars 93 and up where I'm at.

OBD II is 96 and newer vehicles. GM had OBD 1.5 in cars in 95. kinda a bastard love child of OBD I and OBD II. OBD I ended by federal mandate in 95 and came in mid-late 80s and early 90s vehicles. Autozone can't usually check OBD I systems but they have the scanners to do OBD II systems for free.

Write the codes down and post'em before buying anything. Since you're in CA I wouldn't be suprised if they won't clear the codes.

F-bodies got OBDII starting in '96. '95's have the 16 pin OBDII port, but were OBDI. '93 was the last year you could flash the codes yourself by jumping the pins on the port.

OK, just realized you have a '95 3.8 - that was OBDII. http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#how_many_cats
