    4:10's installed today!!!!!

just about 5 hours ago my 4:10's were installed into my SS and let me tell ya everyone that said those gears were a good idea were EXACTLY right! for one its easier on my stock clutch and the rpms stay up around 5 grand when im blowing through the gears. i love it and would recommend 4:10's for anyone with a 6-speed.

How much they cost you? And did you put them in the stock housing?

The gears themselves are probably $250. Give or take.
    Install depends on shop.

You can install a 4.10 in the stock rear.

    I run 4.11's with an aftermarket 9".
My only problem with the 4.11's....I would run out of gear in the 1/4 mile at sea level. But they work perfect at my altitude.

    It depends on the car.
If you want the absolute best ET's out of it...4.10's.

    Street gears would be 3.73's.

The higher the number the faster you go through the gears.
Gears increase the torque output....it just doesn't show on the dyno.

wow I want some, I'm just worried about gas mileage. How much faster do you think they'll make you in the 1320?

I was dealing with some of the same questions a couple weeks ago. I have a 6-speed and just installed Motive Performance 3.90's (because I couldn't decide between 3.73s and 4.10s) and they make a HUGE difference when you're playing around and running through the gears. They're great for highway racing because they put you higher up in the band.

Here's the deal with gas mileage: when your in the city, it isn't going to matter, because instead of driving in 4th gear at 35 mph, now your in the lower part of 5th gear. There will be a slight effect on mileage for highway driving.....at 80 mph in 6th gear on the highway, there is roughly a 200 rpm difference from my stock 3.42s and the 3.90s I just installed. I'll check out the link Mr. Luos posted above to get you a more precise figure. All in all, the performance increase is WELL worth the small sacrafice in highway mileage.

i agree, one of the best mods ive done to my 2002 ss, if you drive like normal people, at 70 mph ,im only tach 2k,in 6th, ist thru 5th you better hang on, i used gm 4.10 gears, they are the quiet one i found out, i recommend anyone, it like adding 50hp or so, its one big mod, compared to the 3.42 stock, make the gear change, should be on top of the list. ill let ya know next week ,when i take her to the track ABBY

umm.. it might be a little late to tell you this now. take it easy on the new gears for about 500 miles. try to granny shift it. otherwise you may get at of grinding noise later on. i know its very hard to do that!

does putting higher ratio gears reduce stress on your entire diff. assembly? more torque transfer to the wheels? and i assume you need way better tires for the track to keep them on the road... am i correct on this?

    Not better per say.
Just better for a street car where gas mileage is a concern.
