lucky what i was looking into was near double that amount. same campus just different courses. what i wanted was not worth the money to me. i ended up joining a trade which pays for my schooling, and if i leave the industry i dont have to pay anything back. if i go non-union in the same industry i will have to pay for it though. but i have no intentions of doing the same work for no benefits.

i am in my 2nd year of the apprenticeship and so far its given me way more than what the automotive industry has to offer in vegas. unless i opened up my own shop of course which i wouldnt be able to get the money anytime within the next 5 years. that industry is too shaky here. i like both my trade and cars as far as work goes. it allows me to say i turn wrenches on my own car and help build casinos in las vegas. i think i like the car stuff as more of a hobby more than i do as a job though. ive gotten frustrated a few times with trying to do my own work and ive yet to be frustrated with the trades work. but thats my position. i made a choice and it happened to work out for me.

To go to those kind of schools like UTI, wyotech etc. do you have to have good grades through high school or is that not required? Just wondering

It depends on what you wanna do with that education. If you just wanna be an automotive technician, then NO...its definitely not worth it 99.999% of the time. I got my auto tech education at the local community college for about $6000 for a 2 year program. That was 9 years ago though...

^ Yep, I think it's pointless to go to be a technition. My school district has a "career center" where you can get your ase certification in general stuff. I think the point of something like s.a.m. is for chassis, suspension, and engine building. Not to become a tech.

Don't.
Most automotive schools, as well as places like ITTtech, Devry, Everest, just want your money and in return basically give you a worthless degree.
Basically any school that is advertised in a TV commercial, cross off your list.
Go to a real school or don't bother at all.

I say no. Too much money. I went to NADC about 4.5 years ago. It did get me in the door of Caterpillar making 600 a week take home. Had I known I was going into the heavy equipment side of things, Cat would have sent me to schooling for free. I didnt have any plans of wrenching on 200,000 lb machines though I worked at Cat for over 3.5 years. Was layed off last Tuesday. You dont need that expensive schooling to go wrench somewhere. At any dealership, you will not gain any money per hour because you will still not have any real wrenching experience. Most dealerships around me, almost frown on those schools. Kids get out of there and think they know it all, with zero work experience. Its a shady falling market, at a big buy in cost. Save your 25,000 USD's. Trust me. Do something else.

FUCKING THIS!
GO to votech, every county got one of them lol i went for free in high school. Otherwise start in as a lube guy, and do whatever they tell you to do, get friendly with one of the good techs there and do what he does and learn all you can from him. If you are not a total fuckup they will keep promoting you. Then get factory training through the dealership. This is worth a ton! But make sure you learn your basics first. Like i said, votech or some community colleges are a great way. The crap they try and sell you out of wyotech and uti is absolutely criminal, especially when there are seasoned techs in this field that dont have a job. Last thing they want is some Uti punk with an attidtude that he knows it all cause that school told him hes an a-tech and hes supposed to make 50k+ his first year. Dealers have had it with these kids. TRUST ME. They make all these claims, want all this money and then it turns out they cant set up the fuckin brake machine. Dont waste 25k on that shit. By all means get an education, but spend way less at a community college or local votech and then just get your foot in the door. When you find out that working at a dealer isnt the same thing as " i love cars and i love wrenching on my own vehicle" you might not even wanna do the business anymore. Much better to find that out without that kinda debt. Dont believe me? Go talk to a guy thats in the auto service field for 20+ yrs

NO vote again, don't make your hobby your lively hood cause you will end hateing your hobby.i work at a dealer in a union shop will be voting on a contract soon with a 3yr pay freeze & gm keeps cutting out time payed on jobs.some day i beleve this trade will recieve high pay but not anytime soon.there are many other jobs that pay more & not as dirty of a job.Dealers are Dealers if you think they rip customers the same goes to employees.go to a good trades job,get payed hourly & enjoy tinkering with your hobby.you will be happier. now i will step down off my soapbox.sorry for the rant.just my 2 cents
