Working on the Wind Turbines ** Pictures **
Thought I would share a few pictures. Working on the wind turbines, 300 feet up everyday. Can't be afraid of heights!
All pictures taken with my Droid, not the best.Last edited by Hi-Po; 11-16-2010 at 02:33 PM.

How the hell do you know which one to work on and where it is. GPS tagged or what? No names on them that I can see. Personally if I owned the farm I would name them.

Depends on how your morning is going Usually around 15 minutes with the usual stops along the way. Have a 20-25 pound harness on as well.
Can make it down tower in just a few minutes really. You put your back against the wall and skip a ladder bar, makes for a very quick climb down. Some farms have a climb assister. Basically takes 80 pounds off your wieght, I bet climbing is a breeze with that!

Wouldn't it be easier to climb to the top then pull up your gear with a rope?

See that picture with the crane? You hang that crane over the edge of the nacelle and drop a chain down, hoist all the tools up. Long chain!
Edit: added a picture where you can see my partner hoisting up tools.Last edited by Hi-Po; 11-13-2010 at 11:29 AM.

Off the side? Not that I know of, I'm sure it has happened overseas though. They don't have all the safety regulations over there ie Denmark.
Last year, A guy fell inside the tower at the farm I'm at now. Sounds like it was totally is fault. His leg got caught in the ladder while he was falling and actually saved his life, but obviously destroyed the leg. Of course, He's now suing and will probably win millions.
There have been a few deaths from other things, like a massive turbine over speed. Tech released the brake and the charging circuits were turned off, so the turbine had zero generator load. A turbine with zero generator load will go into a overspeed in less then 20 seconds, and nothing can stop it. The blades are fiberglass and will actually bend so much they will hit the tower and literally chop the tower down. Thats what happened about a year ago.

Cool pics.
Looks like that job would suck on a bad weather day though, unless you get to just hang out at the shop and wait for weather to pass.
