Wisdom Teeth
Here's a fun story, to give hope to some of you whose dentists might have recommended getting your wisdom's pulled and you've yet to do so.
So two weeks ago i went into the dentist. Long story short, I was told that I have cavities on my furthest molars (wisdoms) and those wisdoms will lead to gum disease (independent of the first thing said) and yatta yatta, so the dentist strongly recommended that I get them pulled. So I set up an appointment for a few days ago, went through the entire nervous process and went in for surgical removal at 8AM. No food in me, no water in me, but a hell of a lot of anxiety for sure. lol So i get hooked up to everything except the IV when the Oral Surgeon came in. He asked me a few questions like "Do they hurt"? and "are they bothersome?" I answered no and that's when he wanted to take a look. After about 20 seconds of looking at everything, he told me that I didn't need to have them removed, but the choice was mine. I asked everything I could about rather or not I should have, and he said the surgery wouldn't do anything for me if I took care of them in the long run. So of course I said OK GOOD DAY SIR!
I got extremely lucky there I think. But I still have questions in my mind as to WHY the dentist said what he said, and how it woulda felt if I had them taken out :S Any familiar stories out there?

I still have all my wisdom teeth. I was told a few times early on that they should be removed. I figure why give up the extra chewing capacity if there is no problem
Who knows why a Dentist will tell you that if you don't need it to be done. At least the Oral Surgeon was honest about it. Consider it a Christmas miracle

Mmmm,
I can recall a good one. For a number of years i went to a dentist near to work
and I was always slightly nervous when i went in and the waiting room was like
a bombsite.
He was (still is i guess) an Iranian and he was short and he had the worst dress
sense ever, also his receptionist dressed like a hooker!!!
He always looked as though he was aiming to "win a bet" with what he
was wearing.... Waaay to short polyester trousers with plastic slip on shoes and white
socks... Also sporting a gem of a comb over reminiscent of Colin Farrell in Horrible Bosses!!!!
Hilarious, but to my point.... he told me on a check up i needed SIX fillings!
Well..... Jacked him in, went with a new dentist and surprise surprise... "your teeth
are fine Mr. Ward, see you in six months was the verdict at my initial visit.
You have to be on your guard, eh? I reckon the Iranian was just after some extra
cash at my mouths expense!!!

Kahana you can bet that I felt really thankful after hearing the good news how are your wisdoms holding up? Still a o k?
Speedy geez man that's awful malpractice. Every-time I go into an office, be it dentist, doctor, whatever..I always look deep into everything to be sure I picked a good place. That sounds like a nightmare, the iranian place you were describing! Six filling?? My ass! What a phony. Comically it sounds great, but seriously it sounds awful

So far so good. Not so much for a couple of molars though. Root canals suck

Good to hear! Ouch on the root canals Dentist told me to take extra care of those far molars. Unfortunately I have some cavities on my two top ones, but they're small and are gonna be taken care of on the 2nd!

I have to get mine out eventually. I have a huge hole in the back of one that is decaying more and more. I've only got 3 total, the 4th is nonexistent. I'm also never drinking pop/soda after this year, too many "flossing" cavities.

To my dentist and oral surgeon's surprise, I have six...well, 5 now. I had to have one pulled because it broke, and will probably have to get one more pulled to bring me down to the normal 4, and go from there. If they don't cause any problems I will most likely keep them.

My bottom wisdoms were laying sideways, and pushing forward which could've really caused problems later on(and were already starting to), so I definitely had mine taken out. Also, since they were already in there, I had them take my upper wisdoms too.
I was 26 at the time, and am glad I did it.

I had all 4 of mine removed at 17 due to overcrowding. After that, my teeth straightened out on their own. Best decision ever.
All my cousins work at my new dentists office. Always get an honest appointment.

Having all 4 of mine removed on the 9th. One is already causing problems and the other 3 are coming in at a angle and will cause more. When I told my dentist I was 29 he seemed shocked I still had them.

My teeth have always been straight. Never needed anything other than cleanings and the occasional cavity drilling when I was younger. My dentists have always said there should be enough room for my wisdoms so I left them. Then my gums got infected. The dentist said it was probably due to the skin flaps from my wisdom teeth coming in. They gave me some antibiotics and I was fine for a few months. Then another infection, dentist said the wisdom teeth aren't effecting your other teeth but they way they are coming in is causing places and gaps that you can't reach with a toothbrush to become infected. I could really feel the infections in the back of my jaw and it hurt like a mofo. So after 3 infections I said rip those bitches out... all of em. I have no regrets about it.

my wisdoms jacked up the molars next to them....I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled and all 4 molars next to them pulled......all at the same time plus a couple root canals thrown in for good measure. I did conscious sedation and it was awesome.....I'd love to have 5-6 of those little pills to keep around the house.

Mine came out when I was 16 or so. Had braces back then and pretty much what Jodi said about "overcrowding" so they had to go.

all 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted...and all 4 had to be surgically removed.
as for getting the wrong advice from a doctor I would say the worst one was when I was a kid...when I was like 6 or 7 I had a seizure which eventually led to more seizures. I was from a fairly small town, but we had a HUGE hospital...but big does not always mean smart...the top/only neurologist there gave my mom and I all kinds of bogus advice on how to prevent and they over medicated me "with the wrong medicine I might add". Long story short, we found a genius in Texas that worked at a university who fixed me right up.
that same hospital miss diagnosed my grandfather and almost killed him...Rapides Regional Medical Center is a joke...
my wife also had a pretty bad one in Atlanta. She started having some major "female" pains and her schedule was ALL messed up. She started gaining weight in her stomach "she's pretty small to begin with" so at first we thought she was pregnant...everything came back negative. She went to multiple OBGYN's and not one could diagnose what was wrong with her...went to a specialist at UAB hospital in Birmingham "at the recommendation of someone I knew who had similar issues in the past" and the doctor there found a tumor the size of a grapefruit hiding behind our reproductive organs "how do you miss that...?". It was surgically removed 3 months later...Last edited by theorangeguy; 12-26-2013 at 05:38 AM.

I supposedly only had 2 wisdom teeth with one being pulled. No lower, both are/were upper. Only have one still and it is so far up they said it will never come down. The one that did get pulled was impacted against the back molar and it caused me to lose that tooth as well. Dentist was a small woman and didn't have the strength to pull it out. She ended up calling another guy to come in and he broke it and the molar pulling them out.
I guess she felt bad because she numb me up so bad I didn't feel the back of my skull for 8 hrs let alone my face.

orangeguy sounds like a nightmare. I feel like there are way too many bogus doctors out there getting away with being quacks..i'm glad everything worked out in the end though.
I guess alot of you guys didn't have as much luck as I did :P but hey it's for the better of your health! I'm going to be going back to another guy on the 2nd to be absolutely sure that they don't need to come out; that, and i'm getting a deep clean / molar cavities filled heh

Had 1 pulled. Didn't hurt at all. I drove home 15 minutes after having it pulled.

I drove home after having all 4 pulled. Only thing that sucked was my super numb mouth and all the blood that it was filling up with.

Were you both put to sleep or just numbed? Zinergy it sounds like you had drysocket.. I've heard nothing but painful things about that though.
