why can i see all of my computer screen?

i have a 17'' monitor .but when i open a page (maximize)(desktopbackground)..only 16'' apears theres a black ''stripe'' on the left hand side...which i can't go over with my mouse?any ideas?

You need to change the settings on the monitor and make the desktop fit the screen.

try taking your mouse/pointer....left touch/click ..[keep it down] on the edge of the black part/rest of screen, and try moving it over ...then release...this MAY work.
