    Who plays an instrument?

Just curious... I'm getting a starter drumset for x-mas. I've always wanted to learn to play .

    Sadly now demodded :(

I've been playing drums longer than you've been alive but I'd still ask the same question: What's your budget for a kit? Also how serious are you about this? I ask as I've spent thousands on my kit and quite a lot on lessons when I was younger. It's not an inexpensive avocation.

To The Wretched: What kind of kit do you have? I have a Premier Signia kit in Cherry lacquer finish made out of rock maple that I bought back in 92. It was top of the line at the time.....

I use Vic Firth (what else?) 5A....

Do you play match grip or traditional style?

To the OP: I'd find a qualified teacher if possible. There's more (much more) to it than just banging the drums.

I use the term starter kit loosely. It's actualy a used kit I'm getting from a friend. So it is a "starter kit" for me to learn on.....

It is a 6 pc premier set with 4 Zildjan symbols, pedals, high hat and the stool for 600.00...

Do you already play and you're buying this from a friend? Can't beat the price. If you just starting out (or even if you've been playing awhile) I'd still advocate for finding a teacher. I learned a lot and it was well worth the expense.

The correct way to hold the sticks (fulcrum point and finger placement), proper stick technique, learning bounce and rebound are skills that will allow you to play easier than you'd believe.

I have never had any lessons I've just played around on my friends set. This is something I've always wanted to learn. I will definelty look into lessons though...

Do you play in a band?

Currently no. I do jam with friends occasionally. Years ago (Like it sez I'm in my 50's now) I played in multiple bands at the same time. Didn't matter what type either (rock, metal, jazz, country, you name it) at one time or another I've played in a variety of bands through the years. Marching bad and stage band in HS + played in a rock copy band. Played in several original rock/metal/country bands through the 70's, 80's and 90's. Never made it big but had a lot of fun and good time doing it.

A bit of advice: Learn to play with ear plugs! Especially if you're playing metal. I did and I don't have any problems with my hearing (unlike some folks I know).

Alto, tenor, and Bari Sax, and part-time snare drummer... in high school band, and high school jazz band....drunken rock band, sober but silly karaoke (which was documented on video, and posted on MySpace by a friend )

Also have a couple guitars I strum on, haven't really had the time to learn to play much on them yet, but once college is done and kids are older, I will definately spend a LOT of time on the strings. Still own my alto sax as well, might get her back out one of these days...

Finally, a topic I can really get into!

Yep - Double Piano/Percussion major in college. Got a MSEd. in piano performance. Play all brass instruments as well. Started piano in 69, percussion in 72, trumpet in 78. Been teaching high school music since 89.

    So.....what's your budget?

I know, there's a smartass everywhere, and here I am....
