Where do you vacation in the summer?
Like many, it's that time of year when we have to pick a spot for the summer vacation. Driving, flying, beaches, camping, sights... where are you ladies and gents packing off the family to this year?
I thought we'd be heading back to New Smyrna Beach to rent a friend's house like we did last year, but the dates are not working out. The wife is a total beachaholic and we used to hit the Outer Banks every year just south of the Corolla Lighthouse. Unfortunately, the area continues to be built up and is getting a bit too crowded.
Well, after looking at maps -- and not wanting to go to a Jersey or Delaware beach (no offense to anyone) -- we sort of picked the Connecticut coastline. Right now, the Mystic area looks to be a go sometime in early August. Seems to be plenty to do as there are beaches, attractions and quite a bit of history around the seaport area.
Anyone ever been up that way? Recommendations?

I am heading to France in two weeks, I can't wait. Connecticut is pretty nice. Mystic is a good family place. Not sure about the beaches though but most on the north shore of Long Island are pretty rocky but since it isn't the ocean the water is much calmer so you don't have to worry about the kids. If you like camping there are 2 or 3 places on the south shore of long island where you can camp on or within walking distance to the beach. If you want some info I can get you some links.

My folks and I pack up for a family trip to the Poconos. Stay there for a week. My folks have their own apt and I have my own. Nothing like going to Crossings outlets and relaxing. Either that or my folks go to Puerto Rico to visit my mother's relatives and I stay home and run the fort.

Mystic is nice with lots to do, but come up 95 a little further and you've got better beaches in Rhode Island. If you're going to be based in Mystic for the week there's lots to do when the weather's not great. Foxwoods and Mohegan casinos are real close and most of Rhode Island's attractions are not more than an hour from Mystic. I've visited NJ's beaches most of my life but there not bad up here in New England either.....

I think as long as we have a beach in the area we'll be good. Keeping the kids occupied and interested in things is usually the challenge. We are big fans of camping... in hotels or rental houses.
We have about a 6-1/2 hour haul to get to Mystic - trying to keep the drive fairly reasonable. Once we're there though, another hour up the road would be fine later in the week. Anything you'd recommend? We don't do the casino thing - just never interested us.
