What's a lube techician job like?
A local dealership is offering a position. Lube, rotate tires, etc.
Doesn't mention pay, but says its good with benefits. I'm sure some of you have done it.
What do you think? I'll be bored in a year right?

A local dealership is not the first thing that I thought of...
Yea you will probably be bored but a job is a job and if you work hard and obtain good references it can be a good starting position.
I would hire someone who worked at an entry level job and has good references over someone who has not been working.

You probably wont break flag hours and end up making just your hourly or base...
Say you make a base of 300 a week (average for a lube tech). If you flag 290 dollars you make 300, if you flag 310 dollars you make 310. The problem here is with the kind of work you would be doing... you would need to work your ass off to break your base.
It is kind of a necessary evil if you want to be a mechanic though. This is a bit of a learning opportunity. You may be changing oil all day but you can hang out with a mechanic that may show you how to do brakes... suspension... maybe he'll let you do some of his minor jobs to get some experience.
It is a learning experience but most lube techs don't make very good money... imho.

Most likely you will be hourly. Every service dept I have worked for regardless if a dealership or indy shop, the lube techs are hourly and might get a little flat rate mixed in. This could be a good opportunity or it could be a bad one. All depends on how the dealership treats their staff. Mine could give a crap less about us.

I have a buddy thats a lube Tech, He makes a base hourly salary, plus commission, They kinda act as salesman, tell the customer they need this and that and they get a percentage of the total parts they sell.
Its a good start to get your foot in the door although dont ever just "settle" for a job. Do what ya want and every day is a vacation.

It's BORING. If I am not doing alignments, brakes, exhaust, or water pumps, I am doing oil changes.

Go to Caterpillar, they pay more. Dropping oil all day is mind numbing work. In my 4 years at Cat, just to replace a part would require you to drop sometimes hundreds of gallons of oil. I did many oil changes on machinery, although it is in much larger quantities, it was still pretty boring. Making 21 an hour kinda perked you up though
I guess you could look into it for "job", but I wouldn't think you would wanna do it for an extended period of time.

I worked at a Chevy dealer doing that. Did oil changes, tire rotations, light bulbs, batteries, air filters. Pretty much just the easy shit, but they also had a training program I was starting to go through. Anyway, I made $8.00hr, plus $3.00hr for every labor hour. Oil change paid .3hr and a rotation was .4hr. So, if I did 3 or 4 of those in an hour it was like $16 and some change per hour. I averaged between $325 and $375 a week, take home. This was back in 2005.

the first thing I would do is change my title. No way in hell my friends would let me live down being a "lube technician".
