What's this 2012 Mayan "prophecy" all about?

So someone enlighten me, what is all this crap about 2012 & Mayan prophecies and the end of the world (ancient version of Y2K?)? Haven't had time to read any of the books about it (won't this semester either) so somebody that is knowledgeable give me the short version please.

* I am asking for info, NOT saying I believe in all this shit.

The short answer, and I'm sure someone will give a better long answer, is that they made an astrological-based calendar system. The cycle of their calendar lasts so many years and then 'resets'. 2012 is just the end of the current cycle, as far as I understand it it is like a centennial or millennium is for us. It's not the total end of time in their calendar or mythology, it's just been corrupted in other cultures to mean that...

So is it popular enough that people are going to freak out and start hoarding food/supplies (ex. Y2K) or will it just pass over like a fart in the wind?

Who knows... nobody woulda even known about it if they hadn't made a wonderful 'the world is gonna end' movie. So now some impressionable folks might freak out...

The Mayan calender goes in a 5k year cycle. Also btw the Mayans are still alive only instead of the million or so that lived at one time there are only a handful left in sparsely populated areas who have for the most part lost most of their old culture thanks to the conquistadors. The problem we have is that every crack pot historian that got ahold of the information came up with the idea that the world ended at the end of the mayan calender. Now that historians and scientist actually take time to research the topics and you know actually ask the descendants of the Mayan culture what it means, we now know it is actually just the starting of a new cycle. And like Ramairgod84 said the actual starting and ending date of this cycle varies by a few hundred years depending on who you talk to.

its not just the mayan calendar, regarding 2012.

some solar space crap will happen to about planets and stars aligning, and the possibility of the earth poles switching/reversing.

in others words there is alot of speculation of things that could happen, however if nothing does happen, mankind will make sure something happens since so many are buying into it.
