Question For what reason do most people "DE-MOD"?

Anyone who has de-modded their cars, or has seriously considered it...exactly why did you de-mod your car?

Obviously, sometimes situations arise that require you to maybe do it, but what other reasons do people do it for?

I'm at a point with my car (11.60's), that I can't decide whether to make it faster (along with adding all the required NHRA safety gear), or just saying screw it, and selling off cam, converter and drag wheels and maybe re-do the suspension or something like that with the money. I really don't have a reason other than boredom, and being down the old slippery slope of endless modding too many times, to be honest.

Just curious how others may feel about this subject.

I love the car, but am not sure it's how I want to keep it or not...

I could definitely agree that'd be a good reason to toss in the towel.

Only two reasons I can think of are to sell it, or to make it legal (emissions for example).

You might also de-mod because you had a high compression head/cam setup and want to go forced induction which requires low compression.

De-Modding a car, is like getting a penis enlargement and then complaining that you are bored of all the chicks you banged with it.

i've been thinking about de-modding my monte carlo for improved fuel economy.

it's a 96 with the 3.1L and on my last highway trip with 4 adults i got 19mpg at 70-75mph. it may have just been the passengers though as previously with the same setup i had gotten 27 mpg highway at 70-75mph.

lots of them actually for the 60* v6 series of engines.

on my 3100 i have the following...

custom DHP PCM (cost me a meal for a friend to tune it)
custom made stainless steel mandrel bent RedZ intake with cone filter ($90)
Fast Front Wheel Drive Performance crankshaft underdrive pulley ($80 now $100 i was in on the initial buy)
3800 series II alternator pulley on 3100 alternator (overdrive) ($5 from junkyard)
free flowing exhaust (y-pipe with welded glasspacks) ($200)
transgo jr valve body shift kit ($25)
    3400 throttle body ($25)
    throttle body coolant bypass (free)

the car was stock with 165hp crank and i think...ie not sure...but i think that based upon dyno's of others with similar mod lists that the car is around 195hp crank give or take. about $425 spent on the car and around 30hp gained (on a car that was never intended for it)...so about what...$14/1hp...not to bad in my opinion...especially considering that that pcm costs around $500 and i got it for free because a guy i knew had the test software and he was gathering profiles for DHP.

    i haven't de-modded the car...and probably won't cause i'm lazy...but i have been thinking about it.

You might de-mod a car to return it to it's stock form to sell it as a stock vehicle...or return de-mod it to return it to stock because you like stock cars better. I doubt this happens to our cars often but def. has been done to 1st & 2nd gens a lot.

Some "mods", like short through shifters or pillar gauges simply make the car more precise to drive. Some mods, like headers and cold air intakes can help with fuel economy if properly driven. Some mods, like tranny coolers or stainless exhaust can make the car more reliable and last longer. Some mods, like lightweight wheels and sticky tires can help the car handle better and reduce unsprung weight. Some mods, like a welded roll bar (not a cage). can make a car safer to drive and stiffin the chassis for better handling.

People most frequently de-mod if they are selling a vehicle. The value of used parts, unless you find someone willing to take a risk, is a fraction of their original cost, and the time and effort to remove them os often not worth the return.

Now if you need a child seat and have a six point roll bar installed that is a fairly good reason for demodding a vehicle. If you move into a retirment community where noise is regulated that may be a good reason for returning to a stock exhaust. if fuel economy is extremely poor that may be a reason to go back to a stock converter...

However it is usually a better deal just to buy an economy car if fuel mileage is the concern or insurance rates, or a vehicle with easier access (4 doors) if you are starting a family.

Most D-mod to sell the car as stock.

Then they sell the performance parts seperately.

I chose the "make it faster" route and am in the middle of getting all the safety stuff done- 10 pt cage, etc. If you enjoy the car, can afford the hobby, etc. then why not? You only live once...

    haha...i'm actually not sure.

i only went to the drag strip one time and at that time the only mod that i had was the intake and a not so elegant version of my current exhaust setup. it was my first time at a strip ever and i only made 4 runs and i believe that the best was somewhere in the high 16's. i never learned how to launch the car. but i did whoop the living shit out of a v8 mercury capri in a heads up race.
