WHat gun to buy?
I'll be looking for a 9mm or 45. I don't want to break the bank, but don't want junk either. I will buy new.
Also, if anyone knows what I will need to bring with me to the police station to get my permit feel free to share. I'm in NJ.

NBM / Silver- 00 SS / 71 SS Elcamino
I have an H&K 45, awesome gun but pricey. Sig Sauer is top notch but again Expensive. I don't know your price range, But those are my 2 favs.

Big difference between the two...9mm is good for target practice (cheaper ammo) and a .45 is good for knockdown power. If you're on the fence about it you could always get a .40, with cor-bon 135 grain ammo it has 526lbs of energy...just as much as a .357. I think the .40 ammo is a little cheaper then the .45 too...just a guess though.
I have a smith and wesson M&P .40 and it's awesome...you can get one new for around $530 at a gun shop.

get a 45 or 40, I personally carry a Kimber 1911 45. The difference between a 40 and a 45 as far as kicking is not that much different, be a man and get a 45. One of the best self defence rounds ever. If you carry and are worried about the bullet going through someone and hitting some one else, get hollow points and problem solve. As far as getting a CPL (Concealed Pistol License) you have to have I.D. Social Security Card (I think, be over 7 years since I got mine) and they will run a FBI back ground check. Hope this helps and don't get a 22, trust me. If you don't kill them, they will sue you.
