    This Week Sucks

My grandpa died yesterday. 1/19/1919 - 1/12/2010 Just seven days short of 91. He was a self-employed painter. After he retired he would still get calls every week of people begging him to come paint. When he would go to the paint store, all the people would be asking for tips. Only lived block and a half from me. Would go down there every day as a kid. Taught me how to change the oil on a car. How to rotate tires, still remember taking lugs off when I was 8 with him pretending to let me do it while he was actually breaking them loose. Then we started calling friends and family to let everyone know. Found out one might not make it another week, and another probably won't make it through January.

Oh, and after telling my brother last night, I went to sleep. Woke up this morning to find 24 new texts and 9 new voice mails all the way up to 6am obviously drunk as hell. Little worried on that one.

And not to be selfish, but I gotta go buy a fancy winter dress coat as it will be 30 degrees out and I am a pall bearer. So that will probably be 300 bucks and I will never wear it again.

And his brothers and sisters plus friends are fairly old too, so walking through the 7 inches of snow in the cemetery is not going to be possible for them. So not sure how that is going to happen.

    Sorry to hear that man.

So Paul Bearer is not the task it used to be. Now, it's generally handled by the people who handle the funeral. You may end up carrying him at the church from the church to the car, but that will be most likely on the rolling stand that they use. It's really more symbolic than anything, there's not much "bearing" involved. The funeral directors will probably handle everything else.

Death is not an easy thing to deal with in many cases.

As for your jacket, instead of shelling out the money for that you might try a formal wear place to see if they rent dress coats. If not, then now you can probably pick something up pretty inexpensively. One of my nicer coats I actually got from Macy's I think for around $70 or $80, of course it was on sale at the end of the season. It's not likely to be as expensive as you're afraid of as retails places are usually always a season ahead and will be clearancing stuff already most likely.

There's also always an option of the thrift store type places or wearing yours once and returning it as many people do.

I know that doesn't help a ton, but at least hopefully it helps a bit.

Sorry to hear about this Smkn, doesn't sound like a fun time for you or your family. Hope you can find a good deal or option on the jacket.

It will be an honor to be by your grandpa's side, especially because he made such a difference in people's lives and realized how much more meaningful it is in life to help those around him rather than being selfish or letting opportunities pass him by. I hope I am leaving that kind of impression on people that will last long after I'm gone.

Sorry about the news, my condolences....

Thanks for all the kind words.

We had the funeral today. He died wednesday, didn't feel sad, thursday I felt just as good. Then today, seeing him in the casket, it became real and I've never felt so shitty in my life. Seeing my grandma who was his wife of 56 years pay her last respects was pretty hard to watch too. Hope it's a long time before I ever have to go through that again.
