it's a particle accelerator... it will make oposing beams of protons collide and we aren't sure yet what might happen... we are doing it to explore what went on during "the big bang" and in essence creating one...

1958 chevy pickup 283- 02 gmc z71 5.3L white
had to google it... i knew about particle accelerators, but i didnt know they were building a large scale..
LHC scientists and engineers injected the first protons into the accelerator during two weekend sessions in August. During these tests, the proton beam traveled around only part of the collider, which measures approximately 17 miles in circumference.
holy fuck

I watched a documentary on this a couple years ago. Some guys have even died while making it. This could be very very interesting.

i think it's gonna be pretty kool. there hasn't really ever been an experiment where we learned nothing at all. that being said we just have to make sure that what we do learn benefits us and outweighs the cost of the project itself (roughly $1 billion).

is this where they fear the collision might result in dark matter or whatever that creates a black hole?

scientists have created anti-protons and anti-neutrons (anti-matter) and so they are going to see what kind of energy can be generated out of smashing one anti-proton with one proton. there are some out there that think that by smashing one of each particle together it will result in a black hole forming and destroying the earth. i kinda doubt that.
i'm personally hoping that they will develop some new form of energy or engine from it that could be used to power our cities or propel our spacecraft through the solar system. and yes i am a star trek nerd.

Then again they thought the atom bomb was going to ignite all the gas in the atmosphere.

Sometimes it is just better not trying something that you have no idea about what is going to happen.
Science will destroy humanity, it is only a matter of time.

At least it's mostly France that'll get destroyed. Hopefully Switzerland survives intact.
