Two Incorrect Bank Deposits This Year
I am making this as kind of a PSA, for a problem I'd never heard of until I experienced it. Twice this year I have deposited checks that I soon realized went into somebody else's account. At two different branches. I filled out the slips correctly, but numbers were misread. Obviously, nobody double-checked my name and account number. It took a few days for the bank to correct the first mistake. The second time it was corrected almost immediately, and the assistant manager sounded embarrassed when talking to me about it. Each time, to demonstrate my case, I had to read off incorrect digits from the receipt, so save those things! (And examine them as soon as you get them.) Check your statement regularly, too.
*About a year ago, my big bank was taken over by another behemoth that I won't name, but you probably can figure it out. As far I know, it never happened with the old bank. But the point is that it could happen without your ever knowing it, with you possibly then losing dollars.

i bank with the state employees credit union. i have 2 checking accounts with them. i made a deposit one day, and i knew the lady was going to screw things up b/c she was more interested in talking to the other tellers than actually processing my deposit. when i got home, i had to transfer money from my 2nd account into the main acct b/c she put it in the wrong place, even though the deposit slip was correct.
i would have really been pissed if my paycheck went into someone else's account!

I always keep deposit receipts and check my balance weekly online. Mistakes don't happen often, but, they can happen. Always best to watch your back just in case. It's worth the extra effort.

One of the tellers definitely had worked there before the change. I wonder if the old bank system had computerized safeguards.

My bank has been bought out and merged at least a half dozen times in the last 10 years, and the service gets crappier each time. Mine is also probably yours. I often use the deposit slips in the bank, but this story may make me start using the preprinted deposit slips from my seldom used checkbook more often, as they just scan that and so should be less chance for error...
