TV advice
Bought a new couch last week....bad ass couch. Leather, 4 power reclining seats, and lit cup holders. They delivered it today and as my luck usually goes the frigin TV took a shit last night. It was due....10 year old TV. Just bad timing. Anyhow....looking for some education on what to look for in a TV. I know a few things but not real tech smart about them. I know I don't want plasma so either LCD or LED. I know I want wifi so I can get netflix. No smaller than 55" but don't need a huge one either. I'm looking in the 55-60" range. From what I've read I should look at 120HZ tv's but I'm not sure on much after that as far as picture quality. I'm also not sure what brands are better than others. My buddy has a 60" mitsubishi that is bad ass but he's kinda like me....doesn't know much about the numbers.....just knows it looks good. His shit is so crisp it looks like a cartoon. Any opinions and ideas would be appreciated. I don't have to have the best thing out there.....just want something that looks decent while not breaking the bank since we just dropped a dime on the couch.

Vizio makes decent, low priced sets. I have a 32" plasma in my bedroom, and it's a great tv. Sony, Mitsubishi, LG, and Samsung are also usually pretty good - but the model can always make a difference. Look for a high contrast ratio, and I'd recommend checking out a few different stores.

I've grown to like Samsung brand LED/LCD HD tv's. Their resolution is really good. Like Knight said hit a few stores to see what they look like. 1080p is the highest resolution out there and it is sharp. Most brands have a ton of options, they seem to be pushing hard on home 3D capable sets but they are the most expensive to buy.
I look for price, picture quality, decent sound when I don't want to run through a surround sound system, and the connections in the back, like how many HDMI, DVI, etc... Hell most of the new ones are coming out with CAT5 connections as well as WIFI.
For what you're looking for you are in the $1500-2500 price range.
Check with tigerdirect or newegg, they have some damn good deals.

I like my Sharp Aquos. Costco/Sams is a good place IMO. Got mine from Costco with delivery and the Square Trade 4 year warranty was cheaper than anywhere.

I have a Vizio 42" LCD TV and overall I've been happy with it. It's not a Samsung, but it's much better than alot of what's out there, and for the money, you can't beat it.

Another vizio here and I love it. My parents and my sis also have one or more and there haven't been any issues with them. The quality you get for the price is unbeatable and costco usually has sales on them. I'd get one with built-in apps if you can find one.

I have both, Vizio and Aquas - the Aquas has better picture - I've fiddled with setting on Vizio trying to make it as good as the Aquas with NO luck .... They're both same age and receive about same usage - Vizio is slow to light up when power on ....

I have a 42 inch vizio in the bedroom. It works just fine. They make great tvs for the price, especially if you have a costco nearby. I'd buy another one, no question. Is it as good as a samsung or aquos, probably not, but it's damn close. Go to avsforums, find the thread for the tv you do buy, and people will post up their settings they use. Find the one that the most people like and plug that one in to yours. 120hz is just fine for most people, and some even find 240hz to seem artificial. Unless you're an audiofile, you wont really have a need for a top level LCD, or panasonic if you want the best plasma.
Oh and of new couch?

I recently bought a 60" Samsung LED Smart TV and love it. If you can swing 2 grand, it's a great TV.

What cable provider do you have?
If you have Comcrapstick no matter what TV you buy it will likely be too much tv for some channels.
I went with Dirrect TV, they broadcast in a minimum of 1080dp where as comcast sometimes says "HD" when really it's not any better than 640dp for some channels.
Which is nearly non-watchable on even a half desent set.Last edited by Smittro; 10-04-2012 at 09:10 AM.

Samsung makes a good TV no doubt. The sony bravia line has a very clear picture but it seems so strange, makes every show or movie look....different. Personally I don't like it. Panasonic makes great plasmas as someone mentioned. I saw a 55 inch LED 3d 1080p for sale made by LG for 999.99.

plasma scares the shit out of me......I personally know 3 people that have had problems with plasma tv's. I'd just rather take them off the table completely to be on the safe side. Their price is hard to ignore but I don't want the headache. I think I'm going to get that vizio at wally world. It fits what we need and at 848 is a pretty good deal. The picture looked good on it too compared to the ones that were next to it.

I have 3 plasmas, never one problem with either of my two Panasonics. I have a 12 year old+ pro-scan plasma in my bedroom which needed the audio out repaired. The funny thing is the pro-scan was one of the first flat panel plasmas on the market, it was a 5k+ plus TV when new in 1999 and its picture doesn't hold a candle to my newer panasonics which were less than 1/5th the price.
Plasma has its pros and cons just like the other options. Plasma has obvious advantages over LCD/LED but it has some downsides as well. I am not scared to buy any new panasonic plasma but that is just my experience with them.

2016 Camaro SS - Summit- 2001 Trans Am WS6 - NBM
I have a 42" Vizio and a 32" Samsung, both LCD 1080. Not sure on rest of the specs. Samsung is better for gaming and the kids movies. Prefer the sound on the Vizio, and the bigger screen for movies. The only complaint I have on the Vizio is sometimes the sound will go out, and I have to power off and back on. Not often though. Both great tv's
