took my son out deer hunting (pics)
Took Zach out yesterday afternoon and let him sit with me. Sat for about 2 hours and had a real small button buck come through. I shot it thinking it was a doe. Very small deer but I wanted Zach to have the whole experience. He was real excited about it so it all worked out I guess. Don't like shooting these small bucks but I passed on many other small bucks through bow season so I'm sure this one isn't going to break the bank. I couldn't get him to help me gut it after he got a whiff of the guts but he's going to help me finish butchering it he said. I got it all off the bone today...just have to steak it out. I'm making steaks out of the whole thing and only grinding what I can't make steaks out of. Should be really good meat being such a young/small deer. I'm going back this weekend to try for something quite a bit bigger....or 5 more of these.

That sucks that you have to use slug guns.

Well thats understandable then I suppose. I understand using them in heavily populated areas as well. Out here the area that we hunt (from permanent stands on our own property) our shots can range from under the stand to 400 yards. The buck I got yesterday was around 100 yds (i dont bother with stepping it off...its dead).

I probably wouldn't go out here if these idiots had rifles in their hands. It's already risky enough with a shotgun. I'm sure people that hunt farmland here wish they could use rifles but I hunt hardwoods and normally sniff out the thick shit to hunt next too. I let everyone else kick those deer to me trying to head for cover.

haha, we have a 'bowl' we hunt in, surrounded by few fields and a lot of woods. 3 treestands at opposite ends, foodplots near each stand (weren't planted this year though) and a pond off to the side centerways. expect detailed google earth image in next post..

Red circles are treestands, green circles are food plots, blue is pond/stream.

Nice pics of some quality time with your son. I didn't realize you had to use shotguns in Ohio for deer -- the three years I was there I only hunted small game.

you can also use a muzzle loader. I carried that with me most of the time last year and I plan on taking it this weekend with me when I go but being the sons first time going I wanted to have as much advantage as possible.

I shot a 130 pound Doe about 2 hours ago. Used my buddies muzzleoader. Shot from my permanent stand that fits two comfortably 12 feet in the air. Shot wasn't even at 40 Yards I hunt thick woods, so shooting at close range is a given. Shot it right in the chest. Hit the heart and literally dropped the deer. Didn't even take one step, just dropped.
This was my first deer. I was/am excited.
