Toilet aficionados - this is for you!
I have always been one who hates to waste -- whether it be food, building materials, energy, or in this case... water. Upon coming home from vacation this weekend, I turned on our water valve and found that our downstairs toilet was inoperable. The internals all worked, but there simply wasn't any water flowing in to the tank.
A quick trip to Walmart and I was staring at a wall of plumbing fixtures. I soon spied my tried and true Fluidmaster 400A Anti Siphon Fill Valve, but as I reached for the box I noticed a newer model next to it on the shelf. It was the Fluidmaster 400LS Leak Sentry Fill Valve. Being a conservationist of sorts, I was immediately intrigued. For about $4 more, I could buy a valve that would prevent water waste by stopping the bowl from filling in the event the flapper leaked.
I bought the 400LS and installed the new valve yesterday. It is simply an amazing little device. Beneath the float is a cam that prevents the float from dropping unless the handle has been depressed to flush the toilet. The cam is attached by a short chain to the flush lever, as shown in this depiction: http://www.accentshopping.com/global...ages/400ls.jpg I tested the new fill valve several times and it works as advertised. Should the flapper leak, the tank will simply not re-fill, thus saving umpteen gallons of water. I highly recommend this valve to my fellow toilet enthusiasts.

Yeah, we have a toilet pre-dating low flow. So it's five gallons a flush. But...we pay a flat low monthly rate for water so who cares?

a leaky toilet can waste 100,000 gallons per year.... Thats enough to fill my swimming pool 4 times.

I remember one morning I was getting ready for work and had to take a morning piss. I flushed and everything seemed peachy...until the water supply hose popped and water shot out of the wall and all over the floor. I turned off the water and headed to Home Cheapo for another hose. Came back home and installed new hose and all is good.

Here's one for ya, if you want the toilet to piss at everyone else...
Pull the bowl-wash hose out of the overflow tube, and if its long enough, just poke the end of it out under the lid of the tank, aimed at the patron. When the toilet is flushed, the hose will squirt said patron. Much fun.

wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) to just replace the flapper if it leaks? If the flapper is leaking the tank is going to drain anyhow and will need to be refilled in order to flush so how is that saving water???

It always seems like a flapper leak takes a while to discover. Our water does not stain the bowl, so we never get the tell tale stripe of a leaking flapper. Unless you hear the tank re-charge after leaking, it runs water. I also like the fact that this would technically prevent a catastrophic failure in the event a bolt seal let loose or an external leak developed (other than the inlet hose). You would get one tankful of water on the floor rather than eight hours worth of running water. I still say cheap insurance.Last edited by pajeff02; 06-15-2010 at 02:58 AM.

Hmmm.....so the random "refilling" of the toilet for a few seconds is related to a leaky flapper?
Heck, we're in a rental and the sound annoys me more than anything. I need to head to home depot for some trimmer wire...may as well pick up a new flapper while I'm there.
woot.
