    That was plexiglass, lexan, or something synthetic. And yes, it is that strong. Even glass can be pretty tough to break. I used to be a glazier (glass setter) in my younger days. The windows in these high rise towers are incredibly strong, they have to be. You can hit these things with a hammer and have it bounce back off the glass.
