Somewhere there exists pictures from my old 97 Formula where both ends of the front swaybar itself rusted in half.

Rust happens. I have broken and rusted out several sway bar end links over the years. Most recently, I had to install two new links on our '07 Suburban last year, one in the front and one in the back. You can buy replacements with polyurethane bushings and then coat the entire bolt, both threads and shank, with anti-seize before installation.

I got some poly ones I need to put on. I know mine aren't rusted though, plus it never gets near salt.

It's a vulnerable area for rust, and it will always cause a failure quicker due to the inherent stress that is constantly applied to an end link. And in that part of the country... not surprised. Glad you got it fixed though.

I am somewhat disappointed that you didn't somehow manage to get a bird somewhere in the pictures of the end links.

I photographed this female Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker this morning 4-9-14 in Kettering Ohio
    A woodpecker species
Kinda looks like it's sitting on a sway bar, wooden sway bar with feather bushings, floats like the wind LOL
