    Stupid Law System

I've heard of stupid laws, but the other day my friend goes into gas station, leaves his car running since it is 14 degrees out and he had just left home, wanted it to warm up. He goes in, some kid jumps in and takes off. He got a decent look at the kid though. Calls 911, cops swarm the area. They catch a kid that matched the description next to his car wich the kid ditched in someones yard while leaving it in drive. He matched the descript he gave them but he wasn't 100% on it. The kid happened to be career criminal that they take three times a week and was just on the news for trying suicide by cop trying to get shot...since he didn;t say he was 100% they wouldn't take him for the theft. They said at most it would be joyriding since the car was running. AND then they fined my friend 80 bucks for leaving his car running unattended because of a new law that just went into affect. SERIOUSLY. I would have smashed my car window open, jumped in, pulled my leatherman, and put it threw his fucking heart if it was me.

if you get in your car for a weapon to do some damage to someone with and the best thing you can come up with is a leatherman? It may be time to start planning ahead a little bit better.

Well your friend being fined is kinda retarded, but what he did wasn't very smart either even tho I don't think I would have fined him for his own stupidity im sure he felt bad enough lol. Sure I won't deny that I leave my car running sometimes, but its when im right there pumping gas. To leave ur car open and running and ur walking in the store away from it, thats just plan fucking dumb. The one time I played a lil joke on my friend, I followed him to the gas station one night and parked my car. When he went inside to pay I quick jumped in his backseat since he left the car open and when he came back and finished pumping gas he sat inside the car.. started it up and right when he was ready to pull out I like jumped up screaming with a bk king mask on. He pretty much shit himself hahahaha

When I worked the road, I wrote unattended vehicle tickets quite often... specifically because of incidents like the one you just described. Had your friend simply taken his keys out of his car and locked to door, the following would not have happened:

1.) the car would not have been stolen

2.) the car would not have been damaged (which the other customers of his insurance company must absorb the cost of)

3.) other people's property would not have been damaged (which THEIR insurance companies and customers must absorb the cost of)

4.) the public would not have been put in the kind of danger a stolen car scenario can cause

All of the above, and probably more, could have been easily avoided by taking three seconds to switch off the car and take the keys. Your friend has been given a fine that amounts to a well-deserved tax on stupidity. Had the situation gone further, and people gotten hurt or worse, he might have found himself lead off in handcuffs for much more serious charges stemming from criminal negligence. Also, his insurance company may well try and leave him high and dry with the cost of repairing not only the car, but the property of other people damaged during the incident... I know of at least one insurance company that will fight tooth-and-nail to avoid paying out in a case like this.

Lesson of the day: don't leave a car running unattended, even for a few seconds... it doesn't take a motivated thief very long to put a running car in drive and mash the gas!

I never leave my car running without me ANYWHERE... and I don't even have a car anybody would want to steal.

So this makes everyone who uses a remote start system in violation of a law?

I agree it is stupid to leave your car unattended and runniing, and certainly stupid to leave it running while pumping gas, but to make it illegal simply doesn't make sense.

Remote start have security bypass for that. If you touch the brake or put it in drive it stops after 15 minutes it stops. I use the car starter on my Durango but my car is sleeping for the winter.

I've seen bait cars left running/unattended before. And always left opened and keys in ignition. Cops INTENTIONALLY put the thieves behind the wheel of a deadly weapon. This guy was an innocent victim. He ran in to buy a pop, he wasn't getting gas. Also, I've seen bait cars get away before on tv. The fine was stupid, the only good thing that came out of it is that a I know the kids name and the bartender can point him out to me.

    That is an idiotic fine.

The fault lies entirely with the thief.
