I know how you feel. I usually drive my WS6 to school (63 miles round trip most days, 82 miles round trip on one of the days) 4 times a week. If it gets too bad though, I'll just drive the little four banger Toyota motor thing sitting around here ('95 Geo Prism.. oh yeah.. that'll turn some heads, it's purple too).

I drive 50 miles, 5 days a week. It's depressing that I spend my entire paycheck on gas to go to school and I drive a Cavy. I decided to commute because it was supposed to be cheaper than the cost of living close to the University, but the way gas prices are looking I might have to move.

so.......250 miles per week? Even if your Cavy got 20 mpg, that'd be 12 gallons a week? 48 gallons per month? $150 to $200 bucks a month in gas is WAY cheaper than moving. Or am I missing something?

I feel your pain though, everyone's feeling the pinch.

    Thats 1000 miles a month.

    Here are some random numbers:

If your car gets 20mpg and gas is average $3/gal, you spend $150 on gas commuting per month.

I got to school as well, and around here the cheapest 4 bedroom/living room/kitchen is $300 a month.

And by "cheapest," what I really mean is, "I wonder what the original color of carpets and walls were".

I'd keep commuting, unless your cars milage is really low, or housing is really cheap.

You must also take into consideration work and errands. I put about 450 miles on the Cavy every week. Which means filling up once or twice a week. Gas is almost $4 a gallon here. And on the budget of a Full-time college student who has bills to pay. But oh well I wasnt actually being serious about moving cause work is closer where Im an now than if I were to move closer to school.

Ah, I see. I didn't think about that... I've always lived, worked, and went to school within a 10 mile radius regardless of where school is.

Where do you live where gas is $4?

Oh ok. At $4 I thought you might live in CA or something. It's generally cheaper than other places here, but I paid 3.25 for 87 today

Yes, however, I have no right at all to complain.

This topic is like a broken record, but that article just put a damper on my mood for the rest of the day nothing like trying to recalculate my spending so there is more money for gas and less saving for an SS

I didn't get gas today, but I looked at the signs while driving. 87 octane (I wouldn't dare put it in my baby though, 91+ for me) was around 3.20-3.40 here (3 different cities I am in each day, vary in price). I paid 3.4x for Premium earlier this week.

""The refiners are saying, 'Hey we're not making any money,'" said Tim Statts, vice president of risk management for Summit Energy, a firm that buys energy for big users. "The gasoline price almost has to come up to continue bringing the product to market."

According to John Kilduff, an energy analyst at the trading firm MF Global in New York, refiners are making about $6 off of every barrel of oil they turn into gasoline. That's down from over $38 a barrel last spring."

There is always an excuse for them to raise the price of gas... this article just raises one more for them. According to this article the refineries now are not making enough profit. Go figure...
