Something interesting I learned today.
So I was in organic lab today and we were covering nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Our professor mentioned that when it was first developed, NMR was more of an interesting idea rather than a practical and useful tool. Gradually, NMR was found to be EXTREMELY useful for determining the structure of molecules. More importantly, it had medical applications because of its high resolving power (unlike x ray, which could only see bone). In order to do this, a person had to placed inside an icredably strong magnetic field and then exposed to electromagnetic radiation. It was during this time that the general population had an increasing stigma toward anything with the word “nuclear” in it. The researchers realized that the general population would not be receptive to such a machine, especially because of its name. So in order to introduce it into the medical field without terrifying the public with such words as "nuclear", this device was given a more benign name; one that has become commonplace in most households today...
Can anyone figure out what it is?

I don't really know what a cat scan is or how it functions so I would'nt call what I said an answer lol. MRI stands for Magnetic Resoning image I believe, and sure does fit the bill for the answer IMO

Yep, MRI is the correct answer. CT scans use x rays to take thousands of pictures of small "slices" of the body. Then through computer programs, the slices are staked on top of eachother to form a 3D image.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty cool... Ya I know Im a nerd.

The place I work for just got a 3 Tesla MRI which is the most powerful non medical one in the country. It is super conducting and stays energised without adding energy to it as long as the super conducting coils stay cold. I think it's creepy-way too much like perpetual motion. I watched the educational safety video that goes with it-absolutely amazing.

Yes it’s MRI.
Did you know, there is also a department that’s called Nuclear Medicine? That’s were you get PET SCANS, Stress Tests, Bone Scans, MYOVIEW, Ect.. It does not use Radiation.
MRI is one god damn huge Magnet. The room with the MRI machine has A/C constantly set below 60 degrees. Because when the MRI scan starts it produces tons of heat.
CT Scan, is what was describes earlier. Uses slices of images. Older machines used to take 16 images per square Inch, now with a Better Technology from G.E. it takes 32 images per square inch and double the speed.
X-Ray, just single image.
Ultrasound, uses ultrasonic waves.
How I know? Well I work in Radiology, My father is a Cat Scan/X-ray Technologist and my Mother is a Ultrasound Technologist.
BTW, don’t confuse Technologist with Technician. Technologist is who operates the machine and a Technician is who fixes the machine.
That’s all.

I am not sure where you got the 3D part. CT does not stack images to make a 3D picture.

ok, I wasnt quiet correct on the CT scan. We dont use those in chemistry lab or my neuro lab that I work in.
