    something I never tried.

    It just occurred to me.

if the battery dies in my car, can I roll jump start it in reverse?

    Apparently yes.

    That is all

Any specific reason for reverse? Computer only lets it fire that way?

my car was fine. its just an idea that got to me.

I drove to a slight hill and stopped at the top.

I turned the car off and just turned the key in run with out starting the engine. shifted into reverse and let the car roll back.

Popped the clutch and the car started.

my battery was close to dead on my Saturn. enough to turn the lights on and such but not enough to start. so i thought to myself i'd push it as fast as i could and then pop the clutch.

I had Lawless at the wheel as i pushed the car down the avenue. I got up to a light run and told her to pop it.... car came to a halt with no starting to be had.... sigh.... thankfully someone came along willing to give us a jump and got us on our way. never thought to try reverse....

Not to be a smart ass but why would you ever think it wouldnt work. Its not like the engine spins backwards.
I guess the lower gear ratio would make it a little more difficult but no reason it shouldnt be possable.

Reverse is the lowest gear you got, the engine has massive leverage over the tranny. Gotta be the last choice of gear I would ever bump start it in. That's why you put it in reverse when you stop on a hill, holds it better than any gear.

You know the old saying...worse the car, better the jumper cables.

ive had better luck when pop starting a car in 2nd gear...a lot easier to start than first gear, which normally brings the car to a grinding hault....but yes reverse would be easier than popping in 2nd gear

I've always used third gear for popping it. reverse is LOWER than first, and first is to low. I am suprised it didn't just drag the tires.

I had a Sony Xplode amp in high school that would turn off if the bass hit too hard. I pissed me off so I started to turn off my truck while going down the road at around 50 on a straight and popped it in 5th. Maybe that piss off the truck because one time it stopped running when I stalled with a load of trash in the back on a tree root. It didn't start for over a week. It could have been vapor lock, but I have no idea.

one advantage is the weight transfer compared to a low forward gear

I learned this the when I was 16...the hard way. I DESTROYED a Saginaw 4 Speed in my dad's 70 pick-up by stalling on a hill and thinking reverse would be a good gear to pop start it since I was rolling backwards. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have always wanted to do a transmission swap.

Think about it.....your engine still turns the correct way even when the car is in reverse.

    why wouldn't it start?

I am pretty sure every single member on this forum is well aware that the engine doesn't switch directions when it is put in reverse.
