School Threats!!
So I am a Veteran from Baghdad, Iraq. I had my normal college classes today, which everything seemed like it was normal until I got to my second class for Wednesday. We had no internet as the college firewall went down sometime earlier this week, which is what our class is mainly based off of. Within fifteen mins of being in the class the lock down alarm went off, so of course expecting it being a new semester everybody was thinking well shit it is a dry run(for you military).
Well then we heard threw the announcement that it was the real deal, so I had been talking to a three time veteran of Iraq/Afghanistan veteran in the hallway prior to class. Me and him immediately got together, devising a plan as everybody else was young people, and the teacher only knew school policy to turn the lights off and get the students to one side of the room.
So me and him was in the back of the room the farthest away from the door being military minded its the safest, well me and him started talking and devising a plan together. It ended up me and him taking over the classroom, directing all the other students that had no idea what to do to the farthest corner of the room. Him and me barricaded the door with a table cover the door windows to an extent that it was not easily visible for an intruder to see into. We grabbed what weapons we could conjure/make shift weapons fire extinguisher, umbrella, believe it or not even pens would be a weapon.
So we posted the door, and took out watch while our teacher stood by, letting us do our thing as she realized we was veterans. I guess after about an hour or so she realized that she needed to be up front with us because she felt responsible for the class which we made her go back to all the other students who were much younger with no experience what so ever. So she realized that we had taken control of the situation, that if anything were to happen then we were going to do everything we could if anything were to happen.
After about 4 hours goes by being locked into the same room, me and him had already come to the conclusion that if anything where to happen then it would have done happen. With all the students running up the hallways to get in random rooms, but we did not want to become complacent with the situation so we took shifts watching the window to the hallway.
Well I was on watch on the last hour of 4 hours, and I was kinda crouched, I turned to say something to my new found friend in which his eyes got pretty wide. So all he says was do not turn around fast, don't make any sudden movements when you do so to not impose a threat. So I turned around, and within 5 secs of me turning my head to say something, to turning back around there was a swat officer in the window pointing an m4 at me. So I automatically refer to the defensive prospect, put my hands up, stated loudly that I was a student so I instructed to to turn the lights on and move our barricade out from in front of the door so they could check to make sure there was not a hostage situation. I will tell you one thing now I realize the effect of having the same weapon system I used in Iraq being pointed at you which does not feel all that great.
So with all the columbine shootings, the Virginia tech shootings, plus what ever of major school lock downs threw out history. What is your opinion about the situations, I don't take this lightly myself as my new found friend and me took control of security of the room to insure the safety of our class mates. What is your input on this, the school I go to is a community college called CVCC in NC.

This happened today at my college, it is basically a short story of what went down in our class. Honestly I will go and say the teacher did exactly what the school policy states to do. But in Military spec it is the wrong way to do it, thank god nothing happened today, plus me and another veteran was there to basically add to and correct all the wrong doings in what happened with the schools procedure to make sure we took control of the situation if anything went to the way side. I believe every school(high school, middle school, college, elementary) should know how to properly react plus protect themselves from an attack on an armed suspect.

Glad nothing happened! As a Vet of Afghanistan I praise you for reverting back to training and protecting those who cannot protect themselves!

I've never been thru anything like that in my college days so I couldn't tell you what I'd do. I prolly would've been trying to get with the hot chick in the class who knows.

most skrools/colleges, unless you're in UT, are mandatory CPZs, .."criminal protection zones"...

Yea kinda crazy how it was just instinctive!!
Well there really isn't any hot chicks in the class I was in there is one cute one that sits beside me but not really my type. I am sure that with what me and the other guy did would have set a pretty high bar in those females minds so.
What does this mean?

WTF are you telling me that criminals can carry weapons on campus, but here in north carolina even me being a soldier and concealed weapons carrier I cannot carry my weapon on campus this is bullshit. I seriously carry my side arm every where I don't give a fuck if it is on campus or not, for the simple fact if I kill somebody that has been reported as dangerous on campus, and I kill them, I am a soldier that has served in combat I carry a concealed permit and kill this guy I would be looked at as a hero which I am not shooting for. But in the same right it is the 2nd amendment the right to bare arms!!!

I'd carry on campus anyway. Probably not against the law, just school rules. (maybe tresspassing) Don't get caught. If you have to use it in a defensive situation, well then you'll be glad you had it. (may get kicked out of school tho)

Issue is the law doesnt care what you were before. You are a student now and not a soldier. Its bullshit that we cant carry everywhere but its also the law. We need to respect the laws. Yes, criminals dont but if we do what they do as far as not caring about the laws we are no better.

Not always. If a law is unconstitutional we are under no obligation to abide by it. Many carry laws are, Marylands for example. We (the people) have let Govt reach too far. Yes I can get into trouble for doing so and techniacally may be labled a criminal if caught, but morally I have no problem with it. I do not consider myself to be a criminal for exercising an inalienable right.

..in a perfect world (america), yes... but what you'll find is your training/experience/maturity etc... means absolutely nothing to the nannies who run colleges and make laws... "zero tolerance"... "it's for the chilrens"... = helpless citizens... that's why in there are movements to change it:

in some states, like UT, VA, CO, ..i believe,.. it's left up to the institution... however, i remember a battle in CO, where the court said colorado state u. couldn't prohibit licensed carriers...

I think in IN it isn't even legal to keep it in your car on campus, something I may have broke a few times as I went strait from class to the range
And OP did anything ever come of this threat in the end? Or did someone call in some bs to get out of a test? had that happen twice in one semester once, during mid terms then again during finals, someone must not have studied.

Actually nothing ever come of it, I was honestly started laughing when I seen Saturday in my student email that they would have sessions with counslers for students that felt it was a traumatic experience. I thought I was going to pass out from the laughter of it, the only thing that was sucked about it was the 4 hours of sitting and waiting for something to happen.
I appreciate it, it kinda surprised me how fluently everything happened since it was me and another guy in my class that is a 3 time veteran, the teacher was taken back from I guess how quick we come up with a plan, how we positioned all of the other students in the class also. I guess I can use combat training/experience in the real world.
