Sales Acheivments!
I've done it! I've done it!
I work at a shop (car accessories, rims and tires, and light mechanics). I had a guy come in today... black Tahoe on 24" rims. The following conversation ensues...
Him: Hey brotha.. Do ya'll sell them tools that go on the lug nuts?
Me: What tool are ya talkin' about?
Him: Ya know, the "thing" that takes off the lugnuts.
(Not quite clear still, surely he doesn't mean a socket)
Me: Are you talkin' about the wheel lock key?
Him: No I have the key to the wheel locks but I need the attachment that you put on the key and the lugnuts to take the wheel off.
Me: Oh, a socket? Yeah, 40 dollars.
Him: Wow really?
Me: Yeah, we only sell high quality parts. High grade steel, never rusts.
Him: Ok, I just need one.
I give one to him out of my toolbox, he drives off, and I pick up another socket at Autozone for 3 bucks.
Anyone else with stories about blissfully ignorant customers?

You all think this is cool. this guy is just a thief, same as the guy who breaks into your car and steals your stereo, robs your girl friend at gun point, just a thief.
The guy came to him for his expertise and he sold his integrity for a couple of bucks. He is just a thief.

Way to throw integrity out the window. Way to possibly ruin a great reputation the owner could have created for his company, all so you can cheat someone out of their money.
I'm pretty sure Lieing to someone about a product to cause the consumer to grossly over pay is illegal. (if it is done by a company)
But then again, I am the guy who speaks up if I am given too much change back in the drive thru. So I guess there are all different types of people out there.

Hey maybe the socket was worth $40 to the seller, He didn't hold a gun to that guys head. I have single sockets worth well over $40. Ever here the term Caveat Emptor? it is latian for "buyer beware". That guy was probably happy that he only paid $40 for a socket. Remember a fool and his money will soon be seperated.

Good point, but then again, all he has to do is show it to a more knowledgeable friend of his, and they see "Craftsman" or whatever on the side of it, then he'll know he was taken for a ride.
Also, it just goes to reinforce the idea that people have that they'll get screwed any time they go to an auto shop.
Might not be a good idea to brag about it online, either. Reminds me of a post I saw on a Stang forum a few years back. A guy who works at a dealer brags about beating on a customer's car, turns out the customer was on the same board. Guy got into all kinds of trouble over it.

I believe that if you work in any kind of market, that it is also your responsibility to educate the ignorant.
Ignorance is just not knowing.
Integrity will allow you to educate these people, who will then be far more appreciative and return for more business.
And being 19 is not an excuse, maybe next time he will be more responsible.

Bragging about ripping someone off is probably not a good idea to do on this forum, especially if you ever plan to conduct business in the classifieds here. I would think real hard before I considered buying something from someone on here that made a post like this.

Yeah.. it sucks that he had no idea what he was talking about, but no reason to further the fears that you'll be taken advantage of at an auto-related store or shop just because you don't know as much about it as someone else. I mean yeah, it's sad that he didn't know what a socket was.. but it's for reasons like this that I'm scared as hell to go to a mechanic or a body shop. If I knew all about it, I'd be doing it myself. Since I don't, I leave it up to others to tell me what I need.
You ripped off some poor guy on just a socket, who's to say the other guys aren't ripping me off for hundreds of dollars in labor that isn't really that hard?

Welcome to the goddamn auto industry. If my girlfriend will pay 60 bucks to have her serpentine belt replaced (and she has, sweet Jesus she has) then I can charge whatever I want for a socket.
As far as the owner having his reputation ruined... he was in the room at the time and was equally blown away at the guys ignorance. I'm a salesman and a mechanic at the same time - you think I'm a fucking saint?
Its a law called fraud, and the old saying of karma is a bitch.
Perfect examples?
Best Buy sells those little leather cell phone belt carriers for 40 bucks... employees get them for 5 bucks. FRAUD! FRAUD!
Batteries are 6-8 dollars for a 6 pack. The store pays .50 for them.(With the employee discount my girlfriend had at a place she worked) FRAUD! FRAUD!
Car Audio Accessories? No matter where you go you can be guaranteed to be paying TWICE what the shop payed for the equipment. FRAUD! FRAUD!
Wether you're jacking the price up 50% 100% or 1000% it is Supply and Demand. He had the demand and I had the supply.
Cry me a river hippy.
