How long would it take to notice that you are accelerating in one of these?

Why not turn the car off right away!!!

aren't they no-key, push-button-to-start which makes turning the engine off complicated?

Yeah, that guy could have done a bunch of different things to stop the car before going 20 miles on the highway. Put it in neutral and then shut the engine down.

Yeah, it's push the button to turn on, push the button to turn off. Pretty difficult.

at 61yo and in panic a lot of things are pretty difficult

I don't think it's as easy as just pushing the button to stop the engine, it wouldn't make sense as you could stop the engine by accidently tapping the button when you don't want to

ps. yes the car shouldnt "run away" but you have to be completely retarded to not know how to make it stop as it has a fucking POWER button, a PARK button etc

I sware, regardless of the issue toyota is having, some of these people clearly shouldnt be driving a car to begin with. Thats what part of driving is. As drivers you are supposed to know what to do in emergency situations. Not just put your hands up and pray when something goes wrong.

You can't shut those cars off while in drive. It has to be in park.

The driver said he didn't want to turn off the engine and having no power steering. That road is sort of a mountain road and has turns. It's easy to say he should've shut the motor off and "man handled" the steering a bit....but the guy is 61 years old.

I agree. And until any of us are in a situation like that, we just don't know what the reaction will be.

You can turn the engine off when the car is in neutral.

In that particular car its a pain in the ass to put in neutral because the shifter itself is electrical, meaning its not like a conventional automatic with a direct linkage to the transmission. You have to view the icon on the dash to see if you are in park drive reverse or neutral. It'd be difficult to do at 95 mph now that i think about it.

Yeah, you push the stick to the left and hold it for a couple of seconds. After it's in neutral, you can shut the engine off with the power button. Or, just hit the damn brakes.
