the ruger mini 14 is a nice gun i have shot them and i owned an ar15 for a while they are both great guns
i would probably by the ruger next time just because the only reason i wanted the ar was for the looks of course but i think the ruger is a more comfortable gun to shoot

Lots of great guns to choose from. I have an AK from them, and my cuz got an AK and an military and police S&W .223
The ruger is a Great gun, but on accuracy is a lil lacking. The mp S&W is a tack driver. But the AK's are the most fun to shoot. Also the cheapest ammo, plenty accurate aswell.

I'd say get a DPMS or Stag or RRA ar 15. Make sure you get a gun with a 556 chamber.
lots of good info to be had over at ar15.com

Have AR-15 a COLT of course, love it!
i wouldnt spend a grand on a mini 14, they are not that expensive anyway and they are not as accurate.

even with it jamming we had some fun... he voluteers a haunted hay ride and we got all the pumpkins they had after it was all over... we spend probably around $1,500 - 2,000 in ammo... he now has pumpkin plants growing rampid through out his yard...

Mini 14's are okay guns, but when compared to an AR they fail in every way imaginable. My buddy used to have one and him, myself and my other buddy would go shooting. I have a Bushmaster M4, my other buddy an 11.5" Bushy. We could both group within an inch or so at 100yds while my buddy with the Mini 14 would group like 3 inches at 50 yards and it wasn't just the shooter. We all shot it and we all can shoot. A mini 14 can't even approach the accuracy of an AR unless you throw a bunch of money in it, and then you might as well have just gotten the AR. As for jamming I would say my M4 has a good 4000rds down the pipe, only a single failure which was a bad round and not the fault of the gun.

Mini-14 is a good gun, I've got one with an 8X Leupold, and maybe its just me, but past 150 yards, its not that accurate.
Very reliable though, never jammed, and a great gun for the price.
If you are planning on scoping it though, I'd go with an AR.
