Rock River LAR-15 + Millet TRS
ok so im looking into a nice gun to get into long range shooting with. The gun has been decided, no budging there. I have shot this rifle, I know it well, no issues there. You can't argue with the functionability and reliabitilty of the AR platform, or the availability of parts and accessories. So what I'm looking at is the Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit. its a little on the heavy side, but this isnt a gun to be carried, but everything else on the gun is perfect. 20" stainless bull barrel, aluminum free float tube, .223 Wylde chamber, A2 flat top upper.

The scope I'm liking is the Millet TRS-1. theyve been in optics a long time, but are relatively new to rifle scopes, but have done good so far. this scope is supposed to be intermediate level for people just getting into long range. by long range i mean 300-500 yards. As of now im pretty proficient to 200 yards, but thats about the best you get from hunting scopes.
This one has windage and elevation knobs, no caps and using a coin to site, it has a manual focus so you hold your head where its comfortable, not where the scope looks clearest. 1/8 MOA clicks, rather than 1/4 for more precise sighting. its adjustable zoom from 4X to 16X. at 16X field of view is 8 inches at 100 yards. It also comes with an attachable sun shade, which just looks cool, lol.

and heres a pic of the assembly
I can get everything for about $1300

Not my style for that type of ranges, here is what I shoot
Remington 700 VS SFII in 220 Swift
mine was $1280 without scope and I topped mine with a luepold vari-x II 6.5-20 power scope
220 swift shells are expensive so we handload, my gun shoots 1/4" groups at 200, my dad has the same gun only vs sf I and he usually shoots a lil tighter groups than me

According to my bro.,he's into Long Range shooting, that scope is crap. He recomends starting with a Remington 700P (about $900-1100) with a nice Leupold ($1000-1500) scope.

but you see, that leupold is more than im spending on everything. I'd love to have one, they make great scopes, but its out of price range right now...its something im just getting into.
700P is a good gun, just not what im looking for right now...ive already got a bolt action .308 with a mid range scope

I've had a rough time with cheaper scopes, don't put anything but leupold's on my guns now.

You don't need scope on alot of things. But DS/DS Marine Vet here. Very proficient at 250,300 and 500 yards without a scope. IMO people really need to learn using the iron sites first. Once you get good with that move on to scope.
I like my .270 Weatherby but would be pushing 500 yards with it. The one thing it will not do is tumble like the .223 round will.
I like my AR also but do understand its limits.
But IMO you want distance and pure stopping power.

Might wanna get something with longer range, I hear the POTUS's security is pretty tight.

well yeah, I've been shooting all my life. 30/30 lever action with iron sights is what i hunted with forever. my M44 was iron sights for quite awhile after i got it, im about to take the scope off it, i like it better that way.
iron sights im good to 100, past that gets a little rough...im sure i could hit a person at 200 though.
Right now im good with a scope to 300ish, atleast thats all ive tried. my unclse has the same gun i do, dunno what scope, we were shooting clay pigeons at 300 no problem

i'd look at an AR10... and hold off on the scope until you can buy a good one... I LOVE Swarovski Optik scopes
buy once, cry once... The 55.6 might do you for now but once you get proficient at those distances you will want to push farther. Get soemthing that does the job right the first timeLast edited by ztrouble; 08-28-2009 at 04:19 PM.

ARs are great for all around shooting but they won't drive tacks like a Remy 700 or other custom bolt gun at long ranges. I love ARs myself and have not got into LR shooting, yet. For a factory built AR, that RR will shoot good but a seasoned gunsmith can build a more accurate AR rifle. Head spacing, high quality barrels, custom bolts, etc. I'd go with some better glass though, like Burris or Leupold. May want to upgrade that Burris mount to a Larue Tac. LT-104. AR15.com has an awesome optics classifieds section, I check it everyday.

AR10s are nice, 308 is a good round. but i already have a 308, stout round, looking for something a little lighter.
it also costs twice what im willing to spend on a rifle
you guys gotta keep in mind, im on a hardcore budget. and as of today, camaro fixing costs are about to go way up, so this might be out all together.
gun needs to be under 1100, and not a bolt action, but like i say, im pretty set on this gun
scope needs to be under 400, if its badass, maybe 500, i want 1/8 MOA, atleast 16X zoom, and windage and elevation knobs

Forgot that, my bad. That RR should be fine then. Might want to see if any of your local AR builders could give you a quote on a budget tack driver.
Check out bearbasin.com for new glass. They have a Burris FF2 in 6.5-20X50 with a ballistic mill dot for $479. Make sure if you use that Burris mount, you get the correct tube size(30mm or 1")
Joining some other rifle forums(for their classifieds) could net you some good used glass also.
