rant #1,234,685
I was watching the today show or some morning show a couple days ago and there was a 20something chick on there dishing out financial advice and how to educate your children on finances. I could tell by the narrow hips, good skin tone, and perky attitude that she didn't have kids so all of her advice was either coming from a professor or books. What made it completely obvious was the advice she was giving. She said to start getting your kids familiar with coins between the ages of 3 and 6. First off, there's a night and day difference in a kids maturity level between 3 and 6. My daughter will be 3 next week and I dare someone to give her some coins. I had to pick a rock out of her nose earlier this week....no telling what orifice a coin would end up in. Good luck on sitting down with her and trying to explain what a quarter is. Her attention span is about 30 seconds and her patience lasts about half of that. You're not teaching her shit about coins at her age. My boy will be 6 next month and he does know what a dollar is because that's how much I pay him for odd jobs around the house.....and he earns every cent of that dollar. He may get a dollar for 2 hours worth of work. I do that to make a dollar mean something to him.
Aside from the coin thing here's the one that cracked me up the most. Sit down with your kids while you do the family finances. First off, my daughter would have that shit strewn all over the house the first time you blinked and secondly the last thing someone needs while doing finances is a kid sitting there asking a billion and one questions that they won't remember the answer too 10 minutes later and the questions will have nothing to do with what your'e doing at the time. If I want my kids to help me with my finances I'll ask them to eat less......that'd be a bunch of help.

People will think if somebody is on TV then they must be smart and know more than they do. Usually it is just the opposite. Media has gone to shit.

I think part of the issue is the 20something crowd fresh out of college think they're re-inventing the world. They have all the answers in their minds. The truth is unless they read it in a book they don't know shit.

The gym I work at, the "fitness director" ie my boss, he's maybe a year or 2 older then me, calls all the shots in the inner workings of the gym, it only being a Y at that. But doesnt actually know a damn thing about weight lifting. Hes a college grad and a prime example of someone that over complicates things and everything he knows comes out of book. He hasnt even been using weights all that long, started that in college. So regardless of his basically low amount of experience, hes the one that is actin all innovative because he has a degree. Now dont get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with getting a degree, but I do think that people often just use it to leap frog right into positions they dont necessarily deserve. At these gyms they want you to get all these bs certifications and they have no bearing on whether or not you actually know a damn thing or are even in shape. Its mind boggling. Its not that complicated a topic, yet inorder to look fancy and innovative they start all these fad gimmick workouts in this industry so what comes with that? oh you need the damn certification. Who started this? College people.

well, it's like I always say...some of the dumbest people I know are college educated.
When I was at coke there was a whole group of college educated 20somethings there that had no clue. They would have meetings and committee's to make decisions about having meetings and committee's. That's because few if any of those guys had ever worked an honest day in their entire life so when they did get into the working world they gravitated towards what they knew best. Don't get me wrong, there were some really nice looking flow charts and computer graphics done there but it rarely had anything to do with getting coca-cola out the door.

Hmmmm...I learned the value of a dollar from my father when he took me to work with him. I was five. He paid me, took me out to lunch, and bought me HotWheels/Matchbox cars. Taught me a valuable lesson. Work hard and enjoy your rewards afterward.
Parents need to turn off the TV and take the time to teach and be with their kids. It's that simple.
