Rally car for under $500?
Im going to try to fab up a small low bugget rally car, but I want something dirt cheap. Im going to strip a bunch of shit out of it and fab a roll cage. Any idea on a cheap platform that can take some abuse?

most stick to awd or fwd, but rwd if you knew how to drive it would be bad ass.

maybe you could buy 86 IROC Z 's car, i'm sure he'd sell it for like 50 bucks or something, only problem is that it might not start half the time....

try an old subaru stx-6 i believe they are called, my buddy from back home has 2 of them he keeps saying he's going to turn into rally cars but really they are just collecting dust, but he swears they'd make great rally cars and they were like a grand a piece i think

i think youre thinking of the subaru SVX, perhaps, does it have what seems to be an entire glass top? funky side windows (like half windows)?

Id like to find something in mechanically sound condition with a shit body. Maybe something like an old fwd talon or eclipse.

being a former AWD DSM enthusiast, hence my avatar, i would consider a awd dsm too.. if your gonna put it through serious abuse shit will break though, like first youll loose the xfer case, then the rear axles, then the tranny haha (just my history) but parts are cheap, they have a very stiff chassis. not to mention you can pick up a rolling awd chassis for like 300 and drop your own motor in... but be prepared for a lot of work and parts, even though theyre really cheap... lots of stripped dsms liying around (dont forget the plymouth laser, all three are the same exact thing... ohh and stay away form any dsm built after 1992.5....pm me if you have any specific quesitons im well informed on this subject.

dsms are like crack man. i have a couple buddies into them, and yes they can be very fast and they're cheap, you buy a 3,000 car that runs 12s, but it costs a 1,000 bucks a month to keep the thing running!

You can always find an old rwd car. With that budget it is pretty hard to say which car/model.
You could always fab a dirt oval car as most of those cars do not last a season and most start with a $500-$1000 car.

AWD DSM. Just make sure you get one with a recently rebuilt head, and keep an eye on the timing belt. I would advise just getting an HKS kevlar timing belt as soon as you get the car. They have unbelivable potential, and are cheaper than dirt. I know quite a few people that have reliable DSM's. Its a matter of taking care of them, and knowing what your doing in modding them.

balance shaft elminator kit, the best timing belt you can buy, replace the timing belt tensioner and all of the sliders. Make sure that thing cannot jump time, ever.

I'd go for a Suby. There's a ton of em out there for cheap and there isn't a more reliable car out there. Some of em have adustable air suspensions and 6 cylinders.
