quick question!! please help
What type of gears would a stock rear end in 2001 z28 6-speed have? Also, if someone asked "what size, 8.5?" how would I respond? Lastly, how much would it be worth if it had around 60K miles on it? Please advise. Thanks!

2001 3.8 Black - sold- 2000 SS Black M6
I'm curious about gears...a whole new rear end is like $2500.
But if my rear end blows up, what's involved in rebuilding?
Would I just need the ring and pinion? New axles? Or does it all just depend on how bad it blows upLS6 intake, Pacesetters, TSP rumbler !EGR, !AIR, 295/35 BFG KDW II's, UMI Adj LCAs. Tick Master Cylinder, LS7 Clutch and flywheel, Pro 5.0, Lous short stick, Frost Tune.

If your rear is stock, more than likely you will destroy the carrier. Then axles. Usually gears are the last thing to break.
If the carrier goes....well, just ask me or Spaz about the damage it can do. Depending on the carrier you decide to use, you could pay quite a bit. Which in the end, really isn't worth it. Sadly, the rears in our cars were a poor choice for use from GM.

I meant I sold mine for $450. Spaz is still without a rear-end isn't he? Last I saw he might have been getting one from someone...not sure if that happened or not yet though.

I thought all 2001 M6's were 3.42? Or was that just the SS?

Only real way to know for sure though, is to open up the cover and find out. My RPO was for 2.73, but the rear had 3.42 in it. Not sure if axle was changed.

Counting the number of revolutions the drive shaft turns while turning the rear tire 1 full revolution would be much easier.
Ex: 1 full revolution of the rear tire and the drive shaft turns 3.5 times, you have a 3.42 gear. If the drive shaft turns 2-3/4 times, you have a 2.73 gear, etc. You just need to mark the drive shaft with a paint stick or something visible.

01 Stock M6 (No gear change) = 3.42's!
No M6 came with 2.73's, think of 6th gear at 60mph the rpms would be about 500
