Question - part it out or sell it?

I have a 2001 SS - 68k miles, built M6 with LS7 clutch, headers, bolt-ons, pretty much full suspension with Koni DA shocks and coil-overs, etc. I've been daydreaming about convertible C3 Vettes, among other cars, and have decided I'm going to build a Cobra Roadster kit and power it with an LS1/T56. I want a light, IRS, vert. I'd do it nicely but I wouldn't do the kind of build where the car would win all sorts of meticulous shows afterward. It would be a driver.

So, question is, do I keep the SS and part out the stuff I don't use or sell it and just buy the stuff I do need? For those of you who've parted a car out, do you net more from the pieces or the whole thing?

There wouldn't be a question in my mind if the SS wasn't in good shape but it's in great shape. I mean, it's a driver and has the driver nicks on the nose but is in otherwise great shape.

Building a motor would invariably cost more than just using a complete unit but then I don't know the history of whatever particular motor I buy. If I keep the SS, I know the motor and I know the maintenance history.

But then I'd have to deal with the headache of selling all the junk.

    Lend me y'all's opinions.

I do have a vehicle to use as a daily driver. So it's not like I'd be stranded if I took the SS apart.

That's probably what I'll end up doing. It's amazing the way a car is worth more w/nothing on it than it is with lots of high dollar goodies.

My girlfriend flew to Reno today so I have her company car to drive. It is a 2006 Taurus. I told my boss I was having thoughts of stripping the car to the bare body in white and selling all of the parts. I think I could get about 5 or 600 dollars out of the whole car!

If you want more of your $ back then part it. Otherwise, sell it as a whole.

Spaz, I was daydreaming about a C3 because I wanted a convertible, not necessarily a C3. I've moved on from that idea to building a Cobra Roadster.

The SS will be paid off in May.

Put the car back to stock and then sell the SS and the parts seperately.

Hahaha, no no. I'm using my commission check for this previous quarter to pay it off.

I need a project. I just finished getting my Jeep where I want it and the SS has lost it's mystique for me. The only other mods I can really do are big esspensive brakes and power mods. That would be fun, for sure, but it's still heavy and driven by a live axle. The bike is a blast but I don't ride as much as I used to. I really don't think I'll miss it much.

As far as getting back into the "shit" of payments again, I really won't have to. Sell the bike for $5k. Sell the SS for whatever I can get for it - hopefully somewhere above $13k. Sell off the aftermarket parts I had on it - at least $2k. Add that up and I'm only $4k short of Factory Five's "Complete" kit with IRS. The remainder of my commission for this quarter after paying off the SS will likely be enough to cover that.

This all assumes that I pay the full price for the Factory Five kit, too. Which I won't because I plan on deducting/substituting quite a few items.

There will be plenty of other expenses involved as the build progresses but they don't all have to be paid up front. That's part of a project anyways.

My biggest regret in selling the SS will be losing the M6 and clutch. Those were hard work, anything but cheap, and can't reasonably be swapped off.

No top at all. It'll be a fair weather only ride.

The BUG (Big Ugly Jeep) is my rainy weather ride.
