    Premium gas REALLY does work

Ok so I've had a 2000 Firebird and recently upgraded to a 2000 T/A well I was at the pumps the other day and thought it would'nt hurt to run some 87octane oooops that was a bad idea. My engine ran like CRAP for the rest of the week. So lesson learned, guess I should have read the owners manual LOL.

Higher octane inhibits detonation in the high performance engines. Any time that you hear pinging or knocking in the engine you have problems.

The compression ratio of the engine is 10.5:1 .......running anything under 91 octane will make in ping! Wise up!

reading the manual doesn't help. the manual for my 98z says premium is "recommended" but lower octanes can be ran.

whoa hang on a sec 91 is premium, the best I got around me is 89, and I have never heard a ping, Is this ping a bad deal. My dad filled mine up one day when I let him borrow it and I could definatly tell a difference, it ran like shit.

    Yikes.
Best we have here is 91 octane. Most of the country has 93 octane as their premium.

Ping is not good. Hard on the motor.

Its best to run above 91oct. however most places dont' have it. We used to have 94 here in NY then sunoco pulled it.

The computer will retard the timing in an attempt to reduce knock which will reduce HP. Even if the computer pulls timing you still can damage the motor. Blowers teach this the hardway, i've seen to many people chip pistons.

That's because of your elevation I believe.

Hmm, I must be mistaken, but I know for a fact the '93 to '97 LT1's are 10.5:1 compression.

In my 00 WS6 I always ran 93 & when I bought the 02 WS6 I only used 87 in it & never had a problem! Then also in my 04 GTO I ran 93 for a while & this last year I was running 87 & never had a issue. I did notice a little worse gas mileage w/ the 87 though but couldn't tell on the engine. Also my new 06 GXP, I have been runnin' 87 in it & can't hear any ping or anything. I think it might be the car & what it is used to??

Take it to the track, run the two different octanes, and tell us the results.

YOU can't neccessarily hear it but the knock sensor does. The knock sensor picks up the sound and tells the computer to retard the timing until the ping stops.

Other than it "really working", why else would they sell it? I guess to sell to stupid people to make more money?
